    CHARGES AGAINST A CONSUL.
Judson A. Lewis Accused of Ruining and Deserting a Colored Woman.
    New York, September 6.
Julia A. Wright, colored, who gave her residence as 82 Fleet place, complained today at the Brooklyn Board of Charities and Corrections that Captain Judson A. Lewis, white, United States Consul at Sierra Leone, Africa, who, she claimed. is the father of her child, has abandoned her to marry a white woman. She is a native of this country and thirty years of age and is now the mother of a female child, nearly white, which was born in Washington, D. C, on the 22d of April, 1883. In the fall of 1881 she went as a teacher to Sierra Leone, Africa. She went with the Rev. H. H. Garnett. In the fall of 1882 she started on her return to this country in the bark Liberia. On the passage she made the acquaintance of United States Consul Judson A. Lewis, who was very attentive to her. The acquaintance led to promises on his part, she alleges, that he would, as soon as he returned to Africa, take her with him and then occurred the alleged crime. On arriving at New York he saw her carefully lodged in her home. Until the 1st of last August he furnished money for the support of her child. Then he ceased to do so. She applied to the Board of Charities for redress and her case was sent to Justice Walsh. She heard no more about it till two weeks ago, when she read in the papers that Judson A. Lewis had married and given quite a reception to his friends in the steamer Austral. On the 23d of August he left in that steamer for Liverpool, taking his wife with him. Miss Wright is of a light color, and Mr. Lewis has been Consul for his government at Sierra Leone, Africa, since 1850. The allegations made by the woman against him have been reported lo the authorities at Washington.
