    Frederick E. Ruhe, a retired engineer for Carrier Corp., who in retirement volunteered for numerous causes and organizations, died Friday at his home. He was 80 and lived at 117 Summerfield Village Lane, Onondaga.

    "We like to feel we are setting an example for other senior citizens," Ruhe told the Herald-Journal in 1992. "Don't sit back and feel you have to retire from everything."

    Mr. Ruhe and his wife, Caroline, who survives, were the first couple to be named Onondaga Senior Citizens of the Year in 1992 by the Metropolitan Commission on Aging. He was recognized by the New York State Senate for his service to the Coalition for Health and Welfare.

    Mr. Ruhe was a member, elder and trustee of First Presbyterian Church United, Syracuse. He volunteered for many organizations, serving as an officer and chairing committees. He was involved with Boy Scouts; Junior Achievement; InterReligious Council; Racism Work Group for Cayuga-Syracuse Presbytery; State Association for Human Services; Fellowship For Reconciliation and Carrier Retirees.

    Mr. and Mrs. Ruhe chaired for five years the Onondaga Christmas Bureau.

    He was chairman of the Onondaga County Gem and Mineral Society. A lifelong peace advocate, he discovered, cut and polished a piece of horn coral which became the eye of the peace dove mosaic at a shrine in Japan in memory of the victims of Hiroshima.

    Mr. Ruhe was president and national councilman of the Society of Plastics Engineers.

    Mr. Ruhe was born in Rochester and lived in Syracuse 48 years. He was an engineer with Carrier 31 years, retiring in 1978.

    Mr. Ruhe was educated at New Mexico School of Mines and earned master's degrees at Northeastern University in engineering and Syracuse University in business administration.

    Surviving are his wife, Caroline E; a son, Frederick W. of New Lebanon; two daughters, Elizabeth A. Weymann of New Orleans and Barbara White of Portland, Ore; two sisters, Marion Prevost of Florida and Ernestine Robinson of Rochester; and seven grandchildren.

    Services are 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church United, 620 W. Genesee St. A reception will follow at the Parish House. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

    There are no calling hours.

    Contributions may be made to charity.

    Arrangements are by Welter-Price Funeral Home, 2649 James St., Syracuse.

    Caroline E. Wells Ruhe, 95, formerly of Syracuse, died Jan. 19 at Hillcrest Commons, Pittsfield, Mass.

    Born in Ira, she graduated from Cato High School and Emerson College in Boston, and received her master's from Boston University. She retired in 1971 after seven years as director of training and staff development with the Onondaga County Department of Social Services. She previously was a social worker with Child and Family Services, taught at the Syracuse University School of Social Work and worked for the Child Welfare Agency, Boston. She was former president of the YWCA board and she and her husband chaired the Onondaga Christmas Bureau for five years. She was active with the Consortium for Children's Services, the Coalition for Health and Welfare of Syracuse and Onondaga County and ACCORD. In 1972, she was named a Post-Standard Woman of Achievement.

    Her husband of 54 years, Frederick E., died in 1995.

    Survivors: A son, Frederick W. of New Lebanon; two daughters, Elizabeth A. Weymann of New Orleans and Barbara White of Junction City, Ore; seven grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren.

    Services: 3 p.m. Feb. 25 in the First Presbyterian Church United, 620 W. Genesee St. Burial, Woodlawn Cemetery. No calling hours. Devanny-Condron Funeral Home, Pittsfield, Mass., has arrangements.
