Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Anecdote: Holton Martin He marries late at 39 years old. His young wife, Bertha, is 17. They have one child and a year later Bertha dies. Six months later he marries his wife's 17 year old sister. They have a child six months after their marriage and then 5 years later she dies. Bertha died at 21 and Clara at 22.

    The mother of the sisters, Catharine (Seabold) Newmarker also died at a young age. Their father, Henry died at 47.

    Two years after Clara died, he marries for the third and presumably final time to Hazel. "Big Hazel" was trained from the age of 4 or 5 by Lola Earl to be in the circus and became a part of the Earl Sisters act. She remained in the circus until at least 1918.
