Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Anecdote: on Thursday, 16 Aug 1877, at Canton Commercial Advertiser, Canton, Saint Lawrence County, New YorkG, Abner Edwin Rice (11 years old) A sad case of drowning occurred in the Oswegatchie river, a short distance from this village on Thursday last. A number of boys left school to bathe in the river. Among these were Judd Holmes, son of Peter Holmes, aged about sixteen and Eddie Rice, son of Abner Rice, aged 10. Young Holmes, who was an expert swimmer, took Eddie into the water for the purpose of teaching him to swim. Eddie was frightened, and it is thought strangled Judd. They both sank, the younger to rise three times, while the other was seen no more alive. The boys who witnessed the scene were too small to render assistance and too much frightened to give the alarm. The bodies of the two boys were found by divers near the place where they sank about three hours after the accident occurred.
