RUSSELL B. STILLWELL
'At three o'clock Thursday morning, July 18th, 1907, RUSSELL B. STILLWELL of Fossil peacefully breathed his last, in the presence of his wife and his seven surviving children. He has been in poor health ever since the civil war, but was only confined to the house a few weeks before his death, the direct cause of which was Bright's disease and other complications. RUSSELL B. STILLWELL was born in western Canada June 6th 1839. From there he moved to Henry county, Illinois, with his parents when he was ten years old. After living there eight years, he moved to Harden county, Iowa, in 1857, and soon after his arrival there he was converted and joined the Baptist church, of which he remained an honored member until death claimed him. When President Lincoln called for volunteers to save the Union from disruption young Stillwell, then 21 years old, at once responded and on September 7th 1861, he enlisted in the Fifth Iowa Cavalry, Company L, commanded by Captain M. L. PATRICK. His regiment was placed in the field immediately, and he passed through many stirring engagements and many thrilling scenes. He fought until his strenght gave away, when he was granted a two months furlough, at the expiration of which he again went to the front to fight with all his might for the dear old flag he loved so well. After his first three year term of enlistment was over, he enlisted again, and served until he was honorably discharged at the close of the war, when he returned to his home and took hold of the plow handles again. For he was a small farmer almost all his life, who never acquired wealth, but always possessed something richer far - a good name here and a good hope beyond. On April 1, 1866, the marriage of RUSSELL B. STILLWELL and MISS OLIVE A. WALTON was solemnized in Tama County, Iowa and they lived happily together till the devoted husband tearlessly passed on yesterday through the dark Valley of the Shadow which all must traverse soon or late. Nine children were born to them, and seven survive, as follows: MRS. S. K. HATCHER, of Fairview, Coos County; RUSSELL STILLWELL, of Kent; MRS. ONA (Leona) ROBERTSON, of Hardman; MRS. LEE MOTE, of Lone Rock; MISS OLIVE STILLWELL, of Fossil; WILLIAM and EVERT STILLWELL, of Mayville, Oregon. This was the first time the children had ever all been together, and it gave the old veteran much pleasure and helped to soothe his last hours, to have them all by his dying bed. Deceased crossed the plains in a wagon with his family in 1882, and after spending about three years in the Willamette Valley, he moved to Eastern Oregon, and has lived in the vicinity of Fossil the past 22 years, most of the time on his homestead near town, which is still the family home, although they also have a comfortable residence that he built in town about four years ago, in order that his younger children might the easier attend school, and that he himself in his declining years might be able to regularly attend the church he loved. He was a quiet God-fearing, good-hearted man.¹'
