  • Anecdote: Nathaniel McClelland Smith Nathaniel was a Tanner, by trade, through the Civil War years, then a R.R. Track Laborer, and Farmer. He moved several times, living for a while near Fairfield, Iroquois County, Illinois. Moved from there by wagon to a farm in Effingham County, Illinois, about 1890. He became affected with Epilepsy in early middle age, forcing his early retirement. He operated a little country store in their 3 room cabin, 6 miles west of Moccasin, Illinois. From 1912-1916 he lived in a small house on the premises of daughter, Daisy Sproat.

    Developed epilepsy in early middle age.2
