  • Samuel Nicholas Page was the son of: William Robert Page and Susan Catherine Mott.1
  • An Obituary for Samuel Nicholas Page appeared on Sunday, 15 Nov 1953, Obituary
Samuel Nicholas Page, son of William and Susan Page, born August 17, 1870, departed this life Nov. 10, 1953 at the home of his son Earl in Rochester, Michigan, where he had made his home the last seven years. He was a pioneer teacher of this community, having began his teaching career at the age of 19. He taught 21 terms of school. In his effects was a contract for a sixteen month term of school for the magnificent sum of sixteen dollars a month. He professed faith in Christ at an early age and became an active worker for his Master. He had consistently taught a Sunday School Class, beginning at the age of eighteen. Just Nov. 8 he taught his class. When he became ill and his physician was called he told him he must cure him before the coming Sunday as he must teach his class. Samuel N. Page and Mary A. Pritchard was united in marriage Sep. 6, 1891. Ten children, eight sons and two daughters came to bless this home. Mr. Page was preceded in death by his beloved wife April 21, 1941, a son Harold A. Page Apr. 12, 1948 and two infant sons. Those left to mourn his passing of their father, Loren A. Page, Bible Grace, IL., Earl Page, Rochester, MI., Leslie Page, Hazel Park, MI., Mrs. Sinona Shufflebarger, Detroit, MI., Mrs. Ada Brookmeyer, Carbondale, IL., Pritchard Page, Detroit, MI. and William Page, East Detroit, MI. He is also survived by twenty-eight grandchildren, forty-six great grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Della Pitts, Cave-in- Rock, other relatives and a host of friends. His life-long friend E. N. Hall, recalls that when school seats were for two pupils, he sat beside Sam Page in Rock Creek school. When Hall wrote, Sam did the spelling for him, just as he did later when they both attended Oakland City College and roomed together. When they came home, both began teaching. Hall wrote poetry for the one who did his spelling. Hall recalls that Sam and brother Allen rode many miles to preach a long crusade in what they chose to call "Evergreen Sunday Schools". To his school friend who has died, Hall has written:

May we take hope from the Poet's faith
There is no death, the stars go down,
To rise on some fairer shore.
But there in Heaven's jewel crown
    They smile forevermore
There is no death, the angels one day
Walk by us with silent tread
They bear our best loved ones away,
And then we call them dead.

The Hardin County Independent, 15 Nov 1953.
