  • Anecdote: Jesse Claywell Came to Ohio with his wife Pense Barriman Claywell. They were from Virginia. They came with their 12 sons, first to Ohio, then to Illinois.

    During the Civil War seven of his sons plied the Ohio and Mississipi rivers with boats carrying grain and ammunition and other supplies to the Northern forces.

    Four of these Claywell brothers were killed by scouts of the southern forces just before the battle of Vicksburg. Only two of the brothers lived to be married, Jesse and Valentine.
