Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Other: Jean Crevier de Saint-Francois Jean was a fur trader whose brother-in-law was Pierre Boucher, the man who founded Boucherville in New France. Jean became the seigneur of Saint-Francois in 1663. In 1678 Jean was one of 20 settlers summoned to Quebec by Frontnac to vote on whether or not "spirits" should be traded to the Natives. Jean voted in favour of it.

During a raid by the Iroquois in Aug. 1693 he was captured and carried off. As he was being prepared to be burnt alive, Major Peter Schuyler the commandant of the Albany garrison, ransomed him for 50 livres, but Jean died shortly afterwards of his wounds. His son Louis had previously been killed during Francois Hertel's expedition to Salmon Falls in 1690.

On 23 August 1700, his widow Marguerite Hertel, and their son Joseph, gave part of their seigneury to the Abenakis and the Sokokis, so that the Jesuits could open a mission..1
