Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Other: Robert Lee Grace Robert Lee Grace was known to everyone as Bob, and was loved by everyone he met. Bob was born March 04, 1940 in Mt. Pleasant. Isabella County, Michigan. The second child of Howard George Grace and Crystal May Robison-Grace. Bob spent the first years of his life in the Mt. Pleasant area. When he was ten the family moved to Owosso, Michigan.

Growing up Bob went to Emerson School in Owosso, then to Owosso High School, where Bob learned to like reading, and got his varsity letter in tennis. Also while attending Owosso High he met Marilyn Jean Beacham and they began to date and on August 27, 1960, Bob and Marilyn were married.

Bob loved camping, hunting and fishing and on September 04, 1961, Darlene Marie Grace was born. In 1964, Jane Sue Grace was born. Eleven months later in 1965, daughter Denice Ann Grace was born. Bob still enjoyed fishing and took his daughters with him. When he had time off from Harris Milling company and later American record press company. In 1969 Bob and Marilyn had their fourth and last child, Theresa May Grace.

In 1971 Bob was sent to Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. There they discovered he had Rheumatoid Arthritis. His doctors told him he would lose the ability to walk and would die within the next ten years. Then in the mid 1980's Bob was sent to Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan where he was told that he was a Diabetic. Bob went on with his life and in 1983 his daughter, Jane and her husband, Jim, gave Bob his first grandchild, Amanda Kay Nichols, and she was grandpa's girl. Nine month's to the day Bob's daughter Darlene had her first child, Ben Allen Brumley V. Fourteen months later, Darlene had another son, Robert Lee Brumley. Two years later Darlene and her husband, Ben Alllen Brumley IV, had their third child, Crystal Albree Brumley, on Bob and Marilyn's 27th wedding Anniversary. Two years later Jane had a son, Corey James Nichols. Then Darlene had another son, Alexander Earl Brumley. A year later Jane had another son, Cody Ryan Nichols.

Darlene lived in Murray, Kentucky and Jane and Jim divorced and Bob spent a lot of time with Corey and Cody. He would take them fishing and they would go ride trains together. Every summer when Darlene came back they would go to Bridgeport, Michigan to ride the train and play and Grandpa would give his grandkids flashlights for in the tunnel.

In October of 2001, Bob fell and broke his knee and was laid up for 6 weeks, the weekend before he broke his knee, he went with his daughters, Theresa and Denice, and his two grandson's, Corey and Cody, to Huckleberry railroad for their annual Ghost train and trick or treating which grandpa would do also, and take a ride in the Genesse Bell. On December 8, 2001 Bob saw his daughter, Jane, get married to Darren Lee Blakeslee. In February of 2002, Bob said goodbye to his mother, and then Bob became very ill.

On May 20, 2002 Bob went into the hospital and on May 22, 2002 he had two toes removed on his left foot. The doctor said that he would have to go into a nursing home until he could learn how to walk again, but not Bob. He was up walking the next day and he came home on May 26, 2002. A couple of weeks later Bob found out he had squamous Cell cancer, a skin cancer, and he had a tumor on his tongue.

Bob had to see the doctor in Flint on Sunday June 30, 2002 because they were going to be closed on July 4th so his daughter, Theresa, took him over. Bob then said to Theresa that his granddaughter, Crystal, wanted to go the old navy store in Burton which was a half hour away. So Bob waited while his granddaughter shopped. That night Bob went back to the hospital because his back hurt. The doctors then discovered his kidneys were failing, he spent the next week in the hospital. He had lost a lot of weight and had agreed to a feeding tube. He went back in the hospital early on the morning of July 10. They discovered that half of his heart had died. Later that night he was joking around like he always did. And at 10:37 am on Thursday July 11, 2002 at Memorial Healthcare Center in Owosso, Michigan, Robert Lee Grace died of Pulmonary Edema, Cardiac Decompensation, the cause of death is listed as Renal Failure and Diabetes..1
