Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Other: Crystal May Robison Crystal was born the daughter of Alfred Alexander Robison and Minnie May Porterfield-Barnes-Canfield-Robison. She attended Riverside School in Isabella County. She was a Member of Salem Lutheran Church. On Saturday December 19, 1936, she Married Howard George Grace in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan.

Crystal was a homemaker and had worked at the A&P store for five years. She also owned and operated Crystal's Ceramic shop. But to Crystal's family she was best known for her excellent baking and cooking (her grandchildren say she was the worlds best cook. One of them said " Grandma could cook a paperplate and make it taste good.)
She had one won several cooking contests and there are cookbooks that contain her recipes.

Crystal has three older half brothers Ward Robison, Harold Barnes and Lester Canfield and three half sisters Hazel Robison, Tressa Barnes-Chivingtonand and Grace Canfield-Scharr and one real brother Cecil Robison. Howard and Crystal had three children Arnold, Robert and Patricia; 14 grandchildren, 25 Great grandchildren and one great grandchild when she passed away on Monday February 11, 2002.

When Howard and his sons would disagree, Crystal would break in and always be right. And she was beatiful. On Christmas day Crystal cooked dinner for her family, and she would make what has become know as Grandma Doc's Christmas cookies:

    First Mixture: Filling

    1 c. white sugar
    2 T. cornstarch
    1 1/2 c. chopped dates
    1 c. hot water
    1 t. vanilla
    2 c. chopped nutmeats

Combine sugar, cornstarch, dates and water, and cook about 5 min. or until thick. Then add vanilla and nutmeats.

    Second Mixture: Dough

    2 c. brown sugar
    1/2 c. shortening
    1/2 c. butter
    2 eggs
    1 t. soda
    1/3 c. hot water
    1 t. salt
    1 t. baking powder
    4 c. flour

Cream sugar, butter and shortening, then add salt and eggs and beat until creamy. Sift flour, soda and baking powder together and add water to form dough. Divide dough in half, roll out, and cut one half with plain round cutter. Cut other half with doughnut cutter of same diameter. Spread plain rounds with filling mixture--about 1/2 t. to each cookie. Place doughnut round on top, press edges together with fork. Place on cookie sheet and bake in moderate 400 degree oven for 6-10 min. Makes 5 dozen..1

One night at his brother Earl's house Howard met the woman he would spend the rest of his life loving, Crystal May Robison. On Saturday December 19.1936 Howard George Grace and Crystal May Robison were married.

Howard went to work for his brother-in-law Clarence Chivington doing construction work on the oil pipeline. He worked for the State of Michigan for a while at a Sugar Company. Around 1940 Howard went to work for Harris Milling Co. He quit around 1969 and went to work at Bourne (they make doors for hospitals and schools) Howard retired in 1976. When Howard retired he made wishing wells, back yard swings and wooden flowers for the yard.

And on September 7, 1941 their last child a daughter, Patricia Ann Grace. All born in Isabella County. In 1950, Howard Moved from Mt.Pleasant, Michigan to Owosso, Michigan when Harris Milling moved.

Howard loves to tell his Grandchildren stories about his past. But sometimes he's a little hard to understand because he's laughing before he can tell you. His Grandchildren loving listening to the stories and if he tells the story wrong, Crystal will jump in and tell us the truth or she would say, "Howard," and he would remember.

In April of 2001 Crystal became too ill for Howard to take care of her alone and Crystal went into Ovid Healthcare. Howard went twice everyday even if he was sick. If Crystal was sick he never left. He would even stay over night. Howard and Crystal celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary at Ovid Healthcare on Wednesday December19,2001 with their family and friends. On Monday February 11, 2002, Crystal passed away at Ovid Healthcare, a couple of minutes before Howard could get to her. He went into her room and held her and he told her that he loved her and that she was with God now and he would see her. When Crystal passed away they had three children, fourteen grandchildren, twenty five great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild..1
