Obituary & Burial

  • An Obituary for John R. Filler appeared on Tuesday, 29 May 2012, in The Del Norte Triplicate, Crescent City, California. John R. Filler

    (Mar. 28, 1922 – May 16, 2012)

John Filler passed away May 16, 2012, at the age of 90 years, in McMinnville, Ore., after an extended illness. He was lovingly cared for by his wife, Ellen, daughter, Becky, and granddaughter Meshel Beasley.

John was born in Portland, Ore., to Roy and Clara Filler and later adopted by his stepfather Conrad Walker.

John attended high school in Yamhill, Ore. He proudly served six years in the U.S. Navy during WWII and went through the battle of Midway in 1942. After the war, he returned to Yamhill where he met and married Ellen Lowther.

John worked for a family logging company in Valsetz, Ore., and was a milkman in Coos Bay (that was where he broke his back, but that didn’t slow him down). John was a founding member of the Coos County Racing Association and announced hardtop races in Coos Bay, was involved in the go-cart races at the old track in Crescent City that was next to Red’s Drive-in, he was a gunsmith, expert trap shooter, was active in bowling leagues, Elks, Lions, he announced the Del Norte County Fair horse shows for several years, plus was active in other local events and organizations. John and Ellen were at the Frontier Restaurant celebrating his birthday the night of the 1964 tidal wave. They waded through the first waves and made it out just in time before the big wave hit.

John lived a happy, active life. He was a great husband, father and friend. He was quick to laugh and always had that twinkle in his eye. He will be greatly missed!

John moved his family to Crescent City in 1959. He worked at Pacific Engine & Machine Works until just after the tidal wave in 1964, he was a purchasing agent for Simonson Lumber until 1974 and then at Sports Unlimited on L Street. After leaving there, he worked for McNamara & Peepe Building Supply and Square Deal Lumber for many years. John worked hard all of his life. He retired in 1990. John and Ellen moved to Bonanza, Ore., for a short time. They traveled in their RV for about 10 years, enjoying much of the time near Tucson, Ariz. They moved to Idaho to be near grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The great-granddaughters will always remember Grandpa making his famous pancakes for them. In 2009 John and Ellen moved back to Yamhill County.

John is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ellen Filler, daughters, Becky Chandler of Las Vegas; Sandra Fernandes of Crescent City; Lorri Lowther of Washington, D.C; five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his son Steven Filler and his parents.
