Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Other: John James Moore John moved with his parents from his birth place in St. Lawrence County, Canada to Ashtabula County, Ohio in 1831 at the age of five years. Later he moved to Sullivan, Wisconsin where he worked as a farm hand for the next four years. In 1851 he returned to Ohio where he married Luretta Hill. About 1854 they returned to the Sullivan area.
John homesteaded 80 acres and later purchased and additional 40 acres. He had a sorghum mill on his farm which produce 2600 gallons of sorghum syrup annually and a lime kiln from which he sold 2000 to 3000 bushels of lime per annum. He must have been a good Republican as he served for many years as County Assessor and County Treasurer. John and Luretta had 11 children. He had a fatal stroke in 1904 and upon his death left the farm to his wife and three living sons. In those days it was not acceptable to leave land to daughters..2
