    VAN LEAR--A 41 year old Lawrence miner and a co-worker were killed last week when a bolt of lightning touched off an explosion at an Addington Brothers strip mine near Paintsville. Bobby Lynn Perry of route 5, Louisa, Junior Hall, 49, of Flat Fork in Magoffin County were killed, when a bolt of lightning crashed into some explosives at the strip mine, located off of KY 3 near the Johnson-Martin County line. Twenty-nine year old James Gibbs of Flat Fork, was admitted to Highlands Regional Hospital near Prestonsburg, for injuries suffered in the blast. Kentucky State Police Det. Ken DeBoard reported the trio was checking explosives at the mine site about 5:30 p.m. when the incident occurred, as the result of a severe thunderstorm. The blast rained rocks and other debris on the men, partially burying Hall and Perry. A frantic rescue began by fellow workers ensued with the three found still alive, DeBoard reported. Hall died shortly before arriving at the hospital, and Perry died about an hour after being admitted. An investigation by U. S. Mine Enforcement and Safety Administration (MASA) closed one pit of the mine where the blast occurred, it was reported by Ashland Coal Co. parent company of Addington brothers and was to remain inactive until the inquiry is completed.

    Funeral services for Mr. Perry were conducted August 13 at the residence of his mother, Mrs. Nellie Perry at Clifford by Elder James M. Lemaster. Burial was in Frazier Cemetery, Clifford. Mr. Perry was born June 28, 1936, at Clifford, a son of Mrs. Nellie Frazier Perry of Clifford and the late James Perry. He was an employee of Addington Brothers Mining Co. Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Mrs. Rosetta Mae McKinney Perry; two sons, Robert Lynn and Roger Dale Perry, both at home, three sisters, Mrs. Mable Prince of Clifford, Mrs. Mary Marcum of route 2, Louisa, and Mrs. Margaret Sue Holland of West Chester, OH, and six brothers, James, Okey, Troy and Walter Perry, all of Clifford, William Perry of route 1, Louisa, and Paul Perry of Dover, DE.
