Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Anecdote: on Wednesday, 13 May 2015, at The Edina Sentinel, Edina, MissouriG, Donald Franklin Tully (76 years old) Old Time News—Compiled by Echo Menges

    75 Years Ago Thurs., May 16, 1940

Strange Accident Fatal—As Mrs. Frank Howe, west of Greensburg was polishing her range Saturday afternoon, she set some polish in a dish on the edge of the stove. Her grandson, Donald Tully, who stays at the Howe home much of the time, was playing in the room and the child, just 19 months old, reached up and upset the dish right into his face, the fumes entering his mouth and nose, and probably some of the liquid.

Mrs. Howe, alone with the child at the time, called neighbors who came and did what they could. Dr. H. A. Schuetz of Baring was also called and they started to Kirksville hospital with the child, but he was dead when they got two miles from home.

The child's father, George Tully, and his grandfather were in Edina and came home but the little boy was dead when they arrived. The boy's mother, Mrs. Ruby Tully, runs the store at Hazelville. She arrived in time to be with her son when he died.

Donald Franklin Tully was the only child of George and Ruby Tully, and was born Oct. 6, 1939.

Burial was in Slocum Cemetery Monday afternoon. F. N. Slocum conducted the funeral services. A choir composed of Mrs. A. C. Slocum and daughter, Mrs. Blanch Fisher, and Miss Doris Dunn, with Mrs. John Dye at the piano, furnished the music.
