Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Anecdote: Iver Christensen Wang 1881 Immigration year. The story goes that when asked his name, Iver misunderstood and thinking he was being asked his city of origin, answered "Vangen." This turned into "Wang."

Memories from Vivienne (Vivienne C. (Morast) Phillips - Find-A-Grave Memorial No. 112763642 - the family historian)

"We never lived in the same town as the Wang relatives, so the only recollection I have of any of them were when we went to visit or they came to visit us, which was a rare occasion. Either way it was usually greeting them by hugging and kissing and go out and play, so the grownups could visit until it was time for meals or time to leave, when the hugging and kissing would start again.

Grandpa Wang had bright blue laughing eyes. They seemed to be laughing because of the beautiful crinkle around them – the same crinkles that Uncle Polly (Palmer) had. It seems he had blondish bushy eyebrows as well as a bushy blonde mustache. His light brown hair was red in the sunlight.

Sometimes he would read his Norwegian newspaper and we would tease him to teach us Norwegian but he never did. I remember him as very quiet amidst all of the female chatter when Mother, Grandmother, and aunts were catching up on all the news.

Grandpa seemed very tall to me. His fingers and hands were thin, tan, and long. That he was a magician I didn’t doubt because it was his magic that produced the beautiful strawberries at mealtime.

He also built some cupboards and a beautiful table and chair for Mother (Jessie) which Cleo now has and if memory serves me, he also built the downstairs bedroom and bath for Grandmother (Anna). Early on they had an outdoor privy, complete with catalog paper.

Grandpa lived a number of years after Grandma died and he seemed too lonely. Cora, Bertha, Polly, Mother and Irene would come over in the later days. According to Mother he died at age 87 of several things, among them hardening of the arteries and arthritis."3
