Obituary & Burial

  • An Obituary for Hazel Bell Cantrell appeared on Thursday, 14 Mar 2013, in The Democrat-Missourian, Harrisonville, Missouri. Hazel Bell Garrett, 89

    April 5, 1923 - March 8, 2013

Hazel Bell Garrett, 89, of Garden City, was born April 5, 1923, at her parent's home near Garden City, the daughter of Valentine Andrew and Effie (McCaslin) Cantrell. She died Friday, March 8, 2013, at Cass Regional Medical Center, Harrisonville.

On Nov. 29, 1942, Hazel was united in marriage to John Garrett in Garden City.

Hazel was a homemaker and, before she was married, had worked at Sears in Kansas City. She was a member of Heart of Life Church, Garden City, where she was a role model for her whole church. Hazel enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, watching the birds, reading, quilting and being around children. She always took an interest in her sons and their farming and would take tours to check on their cattle. She would have her morning coffee and enjoyed having her sons come in for coffee and some kind of snack. One of Hazel's greatest enjoyments was cooking and she was known for her cherry pies. If people would come and work at her place, she always would feed them regardless of how many people were on the crew. Hazel loved her family and it showed when she took care of her in-laws, her husband, and her brother-in-law in their elderly years.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Garrett, on April 15, 1987; a grandson, Brett Garrett on May 23, 1996; three brothers, Euckle, Grover and Roy Cantrell and a sister, Josie Luther.

Hazel is survived by two sons, David Garrett and wife Shirley and Donald Garrett and wife Virginia, all of Garden City; two daughters, Darlus Fidler and husband Kenny, Garden City, and Denise Surber and husband Ron, Harrisonville; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a sister, Doris Harris, Harrisonville; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were March 12 at Heart of Life Church, Garden City, with burial in Garden City Cemetery, Garden City.

Family suggests memorial contributions may be made to Heart of Life Church Memorial Fund, Garden City, or to Cass Regional Medical Center Foundation, Harrisonville.
