Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Other: Isaac Vollick Isaac's last name, Van Valkenburg, means 'from the town of the falcons'. It was shortened to Valk or Valck. English speaking clerks inserted a vowel, making the name Valick or Volick. These were further corrupted to Vollick, Volic, Volk and Follick (the Dutch 'v' sounding like an 'f' to English ears).

He received land grants from Simcoe on Con. 6, East Flamborough Twp, Wentworth Co., and also in Lincoln Co. It appears he settled in Lincoln Co..1

Child of: Isaac Van Valkenburg and Maria Bradt

Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Isaac was in a relationship with Maria Bradt, daughter of: Storm Bradt and Sophia Uzillé, circa 1732 Never actually married. Date based on birth of son.1
  • Anecdote: on Saturday, 7 Apr 1787, at Luzerne County, PennsylvaniaG, Isaac Van Valkenburg (75 years old) “Isaac VanVolkenburg now living at Wyasock in Luzerne County” quit claimed to William Ross, by deed for the sum of £5, “Land Improved in May seventeen hundred seventy three Lying in Missushum flat about Two miles below Standing Stone & six miles above Wyalusing and scituate on the east Branch of Susquehannah river and on the West side of said Branch.” Signed “Isaac VanVolkenburgh.” This deed would refer to the first location they settled upon on the Susquehanna between Standing Stone and Wyalusing and would indicate that Isaac was still living in April 1787. He would have been about 75 years of age and signed his name versus a mark. In a separate deed (Luzerne Deed 2:460) “Bastion Strope now living at Wyasock” conveyed his interest in the same property at “Mussuskum flat” to William Ross on 6 Apr 1787. Bastian signed by mark versus a signature.

    Luzerne Deed 2:459.1
  • Anecdote: on Thursday, 9 Apr 1789, at Luzerne County, PennsylvaniaG, Isaac Van Valkenburg (77 years old) “Isaac VanVolkenburg of Wysocks in the County of Luzerne & Colony of Pennsylvania for the consideration of one hundred pounds Pennsylvania current money to me in hand paid by Isaac Strope and Polly Strope of Wysocks” sold to Isaac Strope and Polly Strope “land lying in the lot of land joining the upper end of Bastian Strope lot the lot containing three hundred acres of which they are to have one hundred and fifty acres on the upper end of the lot being the half of the lot.” Signed “Isaac Volenzburg” but in the deed his name is spelled VanVolkenburg. The deed was signed in the presence of Frederick Eiglor and Henry Strope. Isaac would have been about 77 years of age. A later deed clearly indicates that Isaac Strope and Polly Strope in this deed were brother and sister and they were the two children of his daughter Margaret VanValkenburg and her husband John Strope. Isaac Strope would have been about 21 years of age and Polly about 17 years of age when the transaction occurred. Their parents, Margaret and John, were living at that date but the land transferred to their children Isaac and Polly. It was the same 300 acres known as lot 18 or as “Waterford” acquired under Connecticut title and jointly owned by Isaac VanValkenburg and his son-in-law Bastian Strope.

    Luzerne Deed 1:150.1
  • Anecdote: on Tuesday, 6 Feb 1798, at Luzerne County, PennsylvaniaG, Isaac Van Valkenburg (85 years old) The deed that follows refers to the property that Isaac deeded to his two grandchildren Isaac and Polly. The land was seized by the Sheriff to settle a “suit of Stephen Height (probably Haight) against Isaac VanValkenburg” “the Court of Common Pleas for said County on the Twentieth day of August in the Year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and Ninety Six the said Sheriff was Directed to Expose to sale” “to satisfy judgment which lately in said Court he recovered against the said Isaac Vanvoltenborough.” The land was acquired by Henry Strope, son of Isaac’s daughter Lydia Strope and her husband Bastian Strope. The term “lately” is used which could indicate that Isaac was perhaps still living in 1796 which would place his age at about 84. The deed dated 19 January 1797 indicates “Isaac Vanvoltenborough” was “deceased.” The deed also indicates that only 3 acres of the 150 was improved land.
