Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Other: John Gould He was a Blacksmith at Salem, MA in 1702. Probably he was the John Gould, Blacksmith of Kingstown, RI 1705/6 who married Elizabeth Gardiner. John was referred to as a blacksmith when he received land from his father-in-law William Gardiner 8 Jan 1705/6.

The witnesses to his second marriage were Dorcas Gould (prob. his daughter by his first wife, who had not yet married Caleb Bentley), and Ruhamah Bentley, (prob. the Ruhamah Bentley, sister of Caleb Bentley who later married Dorcas Gould).

On 12 Oct. 1748 John Gould of Crumb Elbow Precinct, Dutchess Co., NY and his wife Mary [his second wife] conveyed to his son Adam Gould, for L492, a lot of land in south Kingstown. (South Kingstown Deeds, lib. 5, fo.33).

By a deed dated 31 John's will was dated 11 Apr 1763 and proved 2 Feb 1764 at Charlotte, Dutchess Co., NY mentioned his wife Mary [his second wife], his son Adam, to whom he left 5s., and his sons William and James, to each of whom he left 100 acres of land and half his livestock, tools, etc

Oct 1765, Caleb Cranston of Jamestown and Mary, his wife, Benjamin Allen, Jr., of North Kingstown and Elizabeth his wife, James Lewis of East Greenwich and Wait, his wife, and Caleb Bentley of South Kingstown and Tabitha his wife, quitclaimed to Adam Gould of South Kingstown all their interest in 20 acres of land on Tower Hill in South Kingstown.".1
  • Other: John Gould According to the Article, "Descendants of Governor John Cranston of Rhode Island, Mary Gould was born at South Kingstown, 11 Mar 1731, died at North Kingstown 3 Mar 1805, daughter of William and Penelope Gould of South Kingstown and granddaughter of John and Elizabeth (Gardiner) Gould."

There follows descriptions of several Gould/Gardiner land records. The most interesting is this: "On 13 Oct 1748 John Gould of Crumb Elbow Precinct, Dutchess Co., NY, late of Exeter, RI quitclaimed to his son Adam Gould of South Kingstown, yeoman, all his rights in a lot of land containing 20 acres given to him an d his wife Elizabeth by their father William Gardiner, late of Kingstown, by deed dated 8 Jan. 1705/6. In his will, dated 11 Apr 1763, and proved 2 Feb 1764, John Gould of Charlotte Precinct, Dutchess Co., NY mentioned his wife Mary [his second wife], his son Adam, to whom he left 5s., and his sons William and James, to each of whom he left 100 acres of land and half his livestock, tools, etc. By a deed dated 31 Oct 1765, Caleb Cranston of Jamestown and Mary, his wife, Benjamin Allen, Jr., of North Kingstown and Elizabeth his wife, James Lewis of East Greenwich and Wait, his wife, and Caleb Bentley of South Kingstown and Tabitha his wife, quitclaimed to Adam Gould of South Kingstown all their interest in 20 acres of land on Tower Hill in South Kingstown."
