Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Other: Edward Rice Deacon Edward2 Rice (Edmund1) was born circa 1619. He was baptized on 26 October 1622 at Stanstead, Suffolk County England; your authors note that the Rice genealogical Register reports the date as 20 October. He married Agnes Bent, daughter of John Bent and Martha (-- --), circa 1647. Barry's History of Framingham states Agnes Bent was without issue which is in error. The will of John Bent in 1672 makes provision specifically for his daughter Agnes Rice and her son John Rice. John Bent's will also proves that Agnes was alive in 1672. As we have a record of only one John Rice at the time who could have been the grandson of John Bent, this is compelling evidence that the line we describe here is correct. Regrettably no record has been found of Agnes' marriage. The birth records of Edward and Agnes' children record the mother as Ann, which was a common variant of Agnes at the time. Edward resided at Sudbury and removed to Marlborough in 1664. Half of farm conveyed to son Edmund Rice of Sudbury on 1 April 1686. Deed acknowledged 16, April 1706. He died on 15 August 1712 at Marlborough, Middlesex County Massachusetts at about age 93.

He resided in 1664 at Marlboro', Middlesex County Massachusetts where he was a Deacon of the church. He declared age 47 in a paper filed in court on 2 October 1666 at Cambridge, Middlesex County Massachusetts. He was in a land transaction on 1 April 1686 at Sudbury, Middlesex County Massachusetts to their son Edmund Rice of Sudbury, half of the farm lying within the bounds of Sudbury, "near the spring." Edward had purchased this farm from his father Edmund and his brother Benjamin. John Rice of Sudbury, a brother of Edmund, had the choice half. Deed recorded 16 August 1734.
