    "Stephen's wife, Mary S. Blakemore, was a daughter of Major John Blakemore, of the famous "Donelson Expedition." Stephen probably went north to North Carolina at the time of the large exodus south with the other Cantrell family members, as he 3was in the service of the Continnetal Commissioners of that state as Captain of the Guard during the Revolutionary War. For the faithful discharge of his duties he was awarded a grant of land, 640 acres on Stewart's Creek, Davidson County, TN. The deed is recorded at Nashville, TN. This land lay in what was afterwards Sumner Co., TN., which was taken in 1786, by authority of North Carolina, off the east side of Davidson Co. During the years of 1792-93 Stephen Cantrell was captain of a company of sixty-three men, organized for the protection of the country against thye inroads of the Indians.
    Stephen Cantrell and William Montgomery were the first representatives from Sumner Co. to the First Legislature in Tennessee, which met March 28, 1786 at Knoxville. He was Senator from Sumner Co. in 1797.".3
