MarriageSaturday, 25 Jun 1910, Robert, age 33 years, 10 months and 15 days, and Alice Myra Scroggie, age 24 years, 11 months and 19 days, daughter of: George Catto Scroggie and Myra Alice Cunningham, were married at Aberdeen, Scotland, United KingdomG.1

Children of: Robert Buchanan Morton and Alice Myra Scroggie

Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Other: Robert Buchanan Morton Robert attended the Aberdeen Grammar School, Aberdeen, and the Royal Academy of Music, London. He studied privately in Dresden, Germany. When his schooling was finished, he taught piano and became organist and choirmaster at St. Ninian's Church, Aberdeen. There he met his wife, Alice Myra Scroggie. He, Alice, and daughter Myra emigrated to America in 1914. He chose Minneapolis MN as the place to live because a distant cousin, John Buchanan, lived there.
He was appointed organist and choirmaster at Glen Avon Presbyterian Church, Duluth, MN in 1914 and the House of Hope Presbyterian Church in St. Paul in 1917. He continued at the House of Hope until 1946 when his health failed. He was twice elected president of the Minnesota Music Teachers' Association and sought to raise standards of music teaching throughout the state. He was probably best known for his work at the House of Hope where he conducted a professional choir and developed volunteer choirs, primarily among the children. He met his second wife, Zylpha Sharpe, at the House of Hope. He married her in 1927.
Robert wrote his memoirs in 1936-1937. This book provides a rich and detailed account of his life and professional practice up to 1927. Copies are currently held by his daughter, Myra, and his son, Ian..1

Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Anecdote: Alice Myra Scroggie "The date of Alice's birth given in the Missouri State Archives is 16 July 1885. The date on a scrap of paper that Alice kept and left to us is 6 Jul 1885. This paper, torn, apparently, from a copy book or ledger, was written by a clerk in St. Francois Co., MO. We believe it was sent to Alice at her request at the time of her marriage. The family Bible also shows 6 July, and that is the date that Alice celebrated as her birthday. The Bible entry appears to be in Alice's mother's hand. The Bible is now in the estate of Alice's niece, Mary Scroggie Lock. Alice's death certificate shows the cause of death as tuberculosis of the intestine.

Alice's mother, Myra Alice Cunningham, died in 1893. It is the family's belief that Alice's father married a second time, but at this writing, we do not know whom he married or when or where. We conjecture that the family set out from Syenite, MO for Scotland (George's home) about 1894. We know that the family stopped in Douglas, MA and that George worked a few years in a quarry there. George died in 1899 in Douglas and his grave is in the 'Old Cemetery'. There is no marker for his grave. At their father's death, the four children were placed in an orphanage in or near Boston. Alice and her younger brothers and sister managed to escape the orphanage, probably in the summer of 1899, and sail to Aberdeen. Why they went to Aberdeen instead of returning to Missouri is unclear. They had relatives and friends in Missouri who would have cared for them. It is possible that their Scroggie uncles and aunts in Aberdeen sent for them or assisted them and influenced the direction they would take. Or their uncle James Scroggie, now in North Carolina, arranged passage for them. In any event, they went to Aberdeen and were brought up by family and friends. Alice lived in the home of a Capt. and Mrs. Lancelot Newton (not relatives) in Aberdeen. We do not know where she went to school, but we do know that she was well educated."1,2

Anecdote Anecdote: Alice Myra Scroggie was present circa Aug 1893, when George Catto Scroggie Family history as related by Heather McTavish Taylor: (after the death of his wife, Myra Alice) George Sr. took up with another woman, a school marm, and she wanted nothing to do with the children. No records have been found to this affect so if there was something printed about it, it will help us know the story. I am surprised that this would have happened so quickly after their mother’s death but I am guessing that George Sr. would have had no ability to care for the children. If only 3 of the 4 went to the orphanage, I would guess that the eldest, Alice, may have not gone and been sent to “work”. I believe it was she that corresponded with the family in Scotland so perhaps she “rescued” her siblings.

Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Anecdote: Myra Alice Cunningham, these notes are from information provided by Ian Morton:

"Dates of birth and death are recorded in the Scroggie family Bible. Date of birth was probably entered by Myra Alice. We believe that the date of her death was entered by her daughter, Alice. The Bible is in the estate of Mary Scroggie Lock, Myra Alice's granddaughter.

Myra had 5 children by George Catto Scroggie, one of whom died about 2 weeks after birth. That child is called simply ,'Our Babe', in the family Bible.

We have a picture of Myra and her first child, Alice Myra, taken in 1885. Myra wears a gold locket in that picture. The locket came into Alice's possession at the death of her mother and father. It is presently owned by Myra's granddaughter, Myra Mayo.

Another picture in our possession shows Myra, her husband, and four children. It was taken in 1892, one year before Myra's death. It shows a beautiful, slender, graceful woman. The original picture is in the estate of Mary Scroggie Lock."1

Anecdote Anecdote: George Everett Scroggie was present circa Aug 1893, when George Catto Scroggie Family history as related by Heather McTavish Taylor: (after the death of his wife, Myra Alice) George Sr. took up with another woman, a school marm, and she wanted nothing to do with the children.
Others were: Alice Myra Scroggie, William Scroggie and Bessie Scroggie.3
