Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Other: Abraham Crose and Martha Ann Pettit It was reported in May 1996 that Abe and Martha Ann, told Ruthie Crose, daughter of Henry, that they were first cousins but did not know this at the time of their marriage. This could only be possible if Abe's mother Mary Ann was a Pettit, the daughter of Samuel Pettit, this would make her Martha Ann's Aunt.
Abe and Martha were first cousins (Abraham's mother and Martha's father were brother and sister), but they didn't know it when they were married. The Samuel Pettit family moved to Lewis County in the 1860's and Abe didn't know his mothers relatives.

Abe was a stone mason building chimneys and fireplace hearths and was well known in the area..1

Abe was a stone mason building chimneys and fireplace hearths and was well known in the area..1
  • Other: Martha Ann Pettit Jesse Pettit's (Martha Ann's brother) family bible has two entries following that for the marriage of Abraham Crose and Martha Ann Pettit. The first says "Walter F. Cornet was born November 7th 1880, the second says "Walter F. Crose was born Nov. 7, 1880", Lila Pettit and Ola Pettit say this is because Martha Pettit was pregnant by her soon to be brother-in-law Jesse Cornett at the time that she married Abrahma Crose, and that Walter was raised as a Crose but took the last name Cornett after he was grown. His tombstone says Crose. Nancy Jane Pettit (Martha's sister) got married to Jesse Cornett Nov 18, 1880 ten days after Walter was born, and six months after Abraham and Martha were married. Question? Why didn't Jesse marry Martha? Was Nancy Jane pregnant too? The first child of Jesse and Nancy that is listed is Lula, born 1884, did they have an earlier child who died young?

Martha Ann was a kind, gentle woman, who could neither read nor write. In her later years, after Abe's death, she lived with her son, Sammy, and later with her son Jesse.

To add further to his relationship of Martha Ann and Abe Crose. It is now accepted that Abe and Martha Ann were in fact 1st cousin's. They did not know this at the time of the marriage. After they were married they discovered that Abe's father John A. Crose had married Mary Ann Pettit daughter of Samuel Pettit and Mary Sharp. Mary Ann Pettit had married a Mr. Elliott and he either died or they were divorced, when John A. married Mary Ann her name on the marriage license said Mrs. Mary Ann Elliott and she brought a son Bluford Elliott to the marriage. After the fact of Abe and Martha Ann's wedding they discovered that Mary Ann was indeed a Pettit, a sister to Martha Ann's father Preston, Pettit..2
