  • Military: David Hungerford military service, David Hungerford was listed as a member of Wadsworth's Brigade in 1776. John Couch of Meriden was the Captain, Nathaniel Edwards of Waterbury was first lieutenant. In the summer of 1776, the company was stationed at Bergen Heights and Paulus (Jersey City), and in October at Fort Lee. In November they were sent across the river to help defend Fort Washington, where David was taken prisoner along with Lieut. Edwards, Ira Tompkins, and Solomon Trumbull.

    David Hungerford's record reads: "Enlisted 28 June 1776, prisoner 16 Nov, died 29 Jan 1777." Whether he died while a prisoner, or in camp with his own regiment is not stated.
  • Reference: Reference page 23 of "For Thomas Hungerford of Hartford and New London, Conn. & his Descendants In America," by F. Phelps Leach, published by F. Phelps Leach, East Highgate, Vermont, 1932. Leach reports: "David, born 1739; died --- 29 Jan 1777; married 5 Jun 1760, Rosannah Williams of "Narragansett"; they lived in the parish of Westbury, then a part of Waterbury. He enlisted in Capt. Couch's Co., Bradley's Battalion, Wadsworth Brigade, Conn. Militia, 28 Jun 1776, and was taken prisoner at Fort Washington, Sep 1776; probably his death was due to his incarceration in British prison ship. 4 Mar 1777, Woodbury Court of Probate granted letters of administration to his wife (and another.) 6 May they appeared with inventory showing a valuation showing a valuation of about 400 pounds. Five children born in Waterbury, Connecticut." (It then lists the children.) Reference page 419 of "Record of Service of Connecticut Men in the I.--War of the Revolution. II.--War of 1812. III. Mexican War.," compiled by authority of the General Assembly, under the direction of the Adjutants-General, Hartford, 1889. In the section entitled "Connecticut State Troops, 1776," further sub-divided into another section entitled "Captain Couch's Company," is the following data: David Hungerford, enlisted 28 Jun 1776, prisoner at Fort Washington, 16 Nov 1776. Reference page AP75 of "The Town And City Of Waterbury, Connecticut, From The Aboriginal Period To The Year Eighteen Hundred And Ninety-Five," edited by Joseph Anderson, Vol. I, by Sarah J. Prichard and others, published by The Price & Lee Company, New Haven, 1896. About this individual it reports: David Hungerford, son of David, married Rosannah Williams, daughter of Mr. Williams of Narrowganset, June 5, 1760, and died Jan 29, 1777.2
