Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Other: on Friday, 21 Jan 1842, Emma Aurelia Mears Milton, VT.
    Jan. 21st (1842?)
    Mrs. Rhoda Knapp
    Aurora
    Dearborn County, Indiana
    Dear Aunt Rhoda, (Cook Knapp)
I now take my pen in hand to inform you of my sincere love to you and my cousins. Persis and I have got to be great girls. We attended school this winter. I persued Algebra, Arithmetic, Chemistry and parsing. Persis
Arithmetic, Philosophy and parsing. I thought of going down to Union Village to remain with Uncle Courtland Cook the ensuing summer and go to school which I am waiting for with great impatience. When father was there last fall Uncle had the kindness of offering to take me into his family unless he removed south of N. Y. city where he can increase in wealth as he thinks as much of still as anybody. And I shall not be of any expence to Father but my tuition and expences there and I hope when I return I should be better qualified to write.
I will now give you a short though imperfect history of our fellings and things that passed while Father was at the west. We sold our place in the intentions of going to the west, and so took cloth thinking he could do better with it there than money but the peaple in this Town could not concent to let him go. Told him Mother's health would not be as good as it is here, which scared her and there was so much said that we settled down in the east part of the Town where Dr. Carpenter lived. He went to Wisconsin and sold his coth at the greatest disadvantage in which he lost several hundred dollars. Therefore we all have to work hard. As you know we were not any to well off before. He lost $75, 75 in the Bank which failed in Illinois. By this time your ready to exclaim oh how foolish, but here we are and hill and rocks we stay with. now and then a relapse of the western fever.

We removed our goods hear and in a fortnight we, Mother, Persis and I were ready to start south to see my relatives which P and I had never seen, so as to have our time as pleasant as possible as we expected Father home before snow fall. we found the relatives all well excepting Aunt Chloe as Martha was but a week old. Time past pleasantly but if we could seen you and your family there we should come home much happier. but we are fearful of never seeing you unless you conclude to visit us as we hope you will.

We looked for P last summer as she wrote she was coming and Uncle John answered the letter but we concluded that you had not received it as she did not come. M???ten we returned as we staid 2 months. We received a letter from Pa saying that he did not know when he should come home as he could not sell his cloth. We did not receive with much pleasure. We could hard???? without him. We did not hear from him again until ??? ???? that he was dead some one th??? ??one another.

[In the margin of the same page is the following, possibly a different handwriting:]
Only think how we must have felt to (have) had him gone all the long winter and all. We pesered hear below with him and with the thought that he was murder and devoured with wild beasts but at last the good news came that he was still alive and may we be thankful for the evening that we again meet. All good health.

[On the back of that page is the following.]
    Your affectionate nieces,
    E. and P. Mears
P.S. We forgot to tell you that Mr. Dan Day and his Daughter Persis which married Mr. Brinsmaid are dead. As he was a ???? of the church and did much for the help of the society his lost was dearly felt. Mr. B. is married again but Cousin Persis Day is still a widow. Mr. B. was under the necessity of marring on the account of 4 little children which were left with out a mother's care one of which was an infant. Mrs. Day has ???? deal of trouble. She got a needle into her hand a washing which broke off which caused a severe sickness which lasted 6 months and was obliged then to have it taken of a little below the elbow.
