Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Other: on Saturday, 11 Jun 1836, Amelia Cook Milton June 11th 1836 (Written in response to the news of Rhoda's husband's death)

Dear Sister (Rhoda Cook Knapp) It is with mingled emotions of pleasure and pain that I sit down to write to you. And my constant prayer is that I may be enabled so to write as that I may administer consolation to a heart that I am persuaded still bleeds at every pour. But how shall I effect an object so desirable shall I refer you to the precious word of God shall I ask you to read and apply its great and exceedingly precious promises to yourself. I am persuaded that you have been there and often found a cordial for your aching heart. It must be a source of unspeakable consolation to you while you trace the sacred page to see the oft repeated testimonials of the regard our Heavenly Father bears for the widow and fatherless. No class of individuals share so largely in the provisions of his grace. To promote their welfare to sustain them under their afflictions and heal their wounded heart is an object so near the heart of infinite Benevolence that He has made pure religion to consist in "visiting the fatherless and widows and keeping ourselves unspotted from the world." Love then thy fatherless children. He has promised to preserve them alive and let the widows trust in Him. But you have doubtless marked, dear sister, that the condition upon which these great blessings are to be obtained or realized is that of trusting in him or in other words exercising faith in his promises. Trust to the immutable promises of God and built upon them is the privilege of going to a throne of grace to tell him all our wants and woes. And without doubt you have turned to this well spring of comfort and refreshed your weary spirit again and again. I then trust his word, believe his promises for "not one good thing of all that the Lord has spoken will fail." I will mention but one other source of comfort to you and us and not this because it is new to you for you have often thought upon it and it has had no small influence in reconciling you to your loss. I refer to the abundant evidence his past Life has afforded that he has gone to a better world. Yes your dear Husband and our brother in the spirit of true wisdom made it his great object when on earth to lay up treasures in Heaven. We cannot therefore sorrow for him as for those that have no hope. No he has gone where he has realized that which he sought after on earth. (He has gone) to his Glorious master. He has awoke in that and he is satisfied. He is pure in heart and has seen God. He has seized a golden harp made ready and attuned for him and has commenced that eternal song of Redemption which will forever fill the souls of the redeemed with unspeakable delight. All tears are wiped from his eyes and sin his worst enemy when on earth will vex him no more. With respect to your dear girls I hope that the afflictions which they have been visited with have been sanctified for their good and that they may through faith rest upon those promises which a gracious God has made to the Fatherless that they may walk in the steps of their pious and ???? Father and inherit the same glorious reward.I know not that any thing of importance has transpired in this place since you left. There have however been some deaths. Mr. Willington brought a quantity of rags from Morton from which the small pox was taken and with which 4 in Mr. Bakus family died, himself, Mariah, Phebe and one of the small girls. There were some other cases but no other deaths. Proctor Adams is dead. Mr. Wilson & Family have gone to S. C. Eleaser Austin lives in his house. Mr. Hunting has bought E. A. Woodruff's Farm and gone onto it. J. Clark has sold out Warm Hill and he has gone to Michigan. Mr. Crane has sold out and gone to Middlebury. J. Clark, S. Boardman (from the Island) & E. Whitney are in Company in the Paper mill. Wh.2
