Obituary & Other Vital Info

  • An Obituary for Mortimer Frank Smith appeared after 15 Feb 1952, M. F. Smith Dies at Center Home

Mortimer Frank Smith, for the past 18 years a resident of Manchester Center, died at his home there on Friday, February 15th, following a long illness, at the age of 76 years.

Born in North Adams, Mass., he was engaged in the bakery business in Meadville, PA, for many years and it was from that town he came to Manchester after he had retired from his business.

For several years he operated a diner near the site now occupied by the Mt. Equinox Cabins. An ultra-modern diner was transported from the factory over the highways to the site here, a matter that created much interest at the time. After a few years' operation he closed out the business.

For a number of years the family has lived at their home, "The Antlers" where they have conducted a tourist business.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, the former Catherine Withrow; a daughter, Mrs. George M. Tuttle of Manchester Center, two sons, Robert of Manchester Center, who is wintering in Florida and Claude of Erie, PA.

Funeral services were held at the Brewster Funeral home on Monday afternoon. Burial will be in Factory Point cemetery.

Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Anecdote: on Sunday, 30 Mar 1924, at Maysville, DeKalb County, MissouriG, Arthur Franklin Sisson (33 years old) Arthur Franklin and his parents' family moved to Maysville, Missouri, in 1890. He grew to be 6 feet 2 inches tall. Arthur found work with the county bridge gang. He was a surveyor and about 1916 county engineer for two years. In 1924 he was mayor of Maysville. Arthur was planning to move to Guernsey, Wyoming, but he was shot on election day at the southeast corner of the square, and died sixteen days later. The assailant Newman Estes and Arthur had nominated each other for mayor and police judge and were in the Ku Klux Klan until Arthur saw its increasingly lawless influences. His unfortunate reply as to whom he supported in that day's election was he "sure wasn't voting for any damned Ku Kluxer." He left a wife and two children.5
