Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Other: Mary Thomas Peacock "Mary Thomas Peacock comes from a long line of Methodists. When old Rehoboth had its beginning at Cage's Bend on the Cumberland River, near Gallatin, Tennessee, in 1791-1792, her mother's ancestors were there. Her paternal great-grandfather, Rolla H. Chubb, was a missionary under the Methodist Church, to the Duck Creek Indian Mission at Green Bay, Wisconsin, in the 1830s.
Miss Peacock was educated in the public schools of Hamilton County, Chattanooga, and the University of Chattanooga. Her graduate work was done at Columbia University, the University of Chicago, and George Peabody College for Teachers where she received a Master's degree.
The years between and since, have been filled with teaching in the Chattanooga Public Schools, serving as a Red Cross Nutritionist, and a hospital dietitian. During World War II she directed the food service for the University of Chattanooga Air Corps, and later was food service manage for the Hercules Powder Company. For the past ten years she has been connected with the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Health Department, where she is director of health education.
Miss Peacock does not claim to be a historian, not even a writer. She says that probably her greatest assets are a dogged ability to work, and that she does not know when she is licked. She maintains that there was a Methodist story to tell and that she was compelled to tell it."
