Obituary & Other Vital Info

  • Rolla Harrison Chubb was the son of: Samuel Chubb Jr. and Relief Frisbie.1
  • Born: Rolla Harrison Chubb was born on Wednesday, 23 Sep 1812, at Poultney, Rutland County, VermontG.4
  • An Obituary for Rolla Harrison Chubb appeared on Wednesday, 12 Nov 1884, Death of Rev. Rolla H. Chubb

We are very sorry to have to chronicle today the death this morning of Rev. Rolla H. Chubb, whose serious sickness we noticed yesterday.

Mr. Chubb was born Sept. 18th, 1812, at Poultney, Vt. During his very young manhood was a faithful missionary to the Indians on Lake Superior. In 1838 he with Rev. Brandeburry joined the Michigan Conference, then embracing a part of Ohio, and which met that year at Tiffin. In 1840 these two were ordained Deacons at Norwalk by Bishop Heading. Mr. Brandeburry on his sick bed at the hotel. Thus for over forty years has this servant of God faithfully filled his place in the itinerant ranks, only retiring on the superannuated list when failing health made this necessary.

Mr. Chubb was a member of the Central Ohio Conference, a man of more than ordinary talent, and through these long years of devoted service has with pen and on the platform fought valiantly on the side of Goad and right. Dying with his pen in his hand as the columns of the Gazette will testify in his late able articles in the cause of temperance.

Mr. Chubb was taken sick only last Monday, with Typhoid Pneumonia, was carried to the polls to vote, and then home where he died this morning at eight o'clock. Faithful in life; faithful in death, his dying testimony was "My only trust is alone in Jesus." He leaves a widow and eight children, five daughters and three sons.

Funeral will take place at the residence on West William street, at three o'clock tomorrow afternoon. The remains will be interred at Perrysburg. Delaware Gazette

The Rev. Mr. Chubb and family were well known to the citizens of Perrysburg and Wood county. He was first stationed here in 1839. Later he became a permanent resident and resided with us for 18 years, removing his family to Delaware, Ohio, a year ago last May. His son Robert informs us that he was never to take as deep an interest in politics as he did in this campaign, taking almost the identical view as the M. E. Minister of Rochester, whose open letter we published two weeks ago.

He would not believe he was dangerously ill and told the Doctor he had been much worse before and recovered, but the Doctor told him that was when he was a much younger man. The distant children were telegraphed for on Thursday, and only one, Mrs. A. E. Bristol, of Fremont, arrived in time to be present in his last moments. Mrs. We H. Eberly, of Bowling Green, arrived on Saturday after his spirit had taken its flight.

By request the Masonic Brothers of Phoenix Lodge, of which he had been a member, took charge of the remains upon their arrival here Monday morning and they were laid away to rest from earthly labors with Masonic honors, Rev. G. A. Adams officiating as chaplain.5
  • An Obituary for Rolla Harrison Chubb appeared on Wednesday, 12 Nov 1884, in The Delaware Gazette, Delaware, Ohio. Rolla H. Chubb

Rolla H. Chubb was born September 8, 1812 at Poultney, Vt. As a young man he was a missionary to the Indians on Lake Superior. In 1836 he joined the Michigan Conference, then embracing part of Ohio. In 1840 he was ordained a Deacon at Norwalk. He died of typhoid pneumonia. Funeral from the residence on W. William St. tomorrow. The remains will be interred at Perrysburg.

Dr. Orville P. Chubb – Pioneer Physician of Martin County

Dr. Orville P. Chubb was called the first practitioner of known medical ability to locate in Martin County, and was appointed Martin County physician in 1867. Chubb was born in Wayne County Michigan in 1830.

He graduated from Wesleyan College in Leone, Michigan, and then attended Cincinnati Medical College in Ohio. After graduating from medical school, he married Sarah E. Gorton and began his practice of medicine in Michigan.

He and his wife had two children.

Soon after the Civil War broke out, he enlisted in the army and served as a Captain in the medical corps of the 5th Michigan Regiment. He remained in the military until the war ended.

In the spring of 1865, he came to Martin County to obtain land under the Soldier’s Filing Law. He returned briefly to Army service, was discharged with the rank of Brigade Surgeon, and in the fall of 1865 returned to Martin County with Col. Lounsberry after having driven a flock of sheep overland. In 1867, he built his home at 209 Lake Avenue in Fairmont, now known as the Chubb House.

Dr. Chubb was described as a very gentle and quiet individual who was disillusioned with medical practice, primarily as a result of his experiences during the Civil War. However, as there were no other physicians in Fairmont, he willingly and skillfully provided medical service to anyone seeking it until the arrival of Dr. Winslow Hunt in 1871.

In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Chubb had abilities in a number of other fields as well. As a surveyor and co-owner of land purchased to plat the village of Fairmont, he laid out the town site of Fairmont. He also laid out the first cemetery, the first fair grounds, and he located many claims for settlers of that era.

Dr. Chubb constructed bridges across creeks and rivers in the county, he examined clay at various locations to determine any that was suitable for making brick, and he built a kiln that he used for building construction. Other endeavors he was involved with included running a store out of his home for several years, starting the first drug store, building one of the first saw mills in the county, and he ran a grist mill with another settler, Alpha D. Cadwell. He also ran a newspaper, was a charter member of the Chain of Lakes Masonic Lodge, served as a county commissioner, Martin County
Treasurer, Martin County Superintendent of Schools, and as Fairmont Postmaster. In addition, Chubb owned a substantial amount of property while a resident of Martin County.

By 1873, Dr. Chubb felt that the community of Fairmont had become too well settled for his restless nature. As a result of this and other factors, he moved on to the frontier of Kansas, Nebraska, and other western states. He finally settled in California where he lived for many years. He never practiced medicine after 1871, and he passed away in Michigan while visiting there in 1894.

Dr. Chubb was known as an individual that put forth every effort to build up the town of Fairmont, and he was considered a worker for all that was honorable and good for the community. He was remembered for his kindness, worthiness as a friend and neighbor, and for his cheerful temperament. Upon his death, his body was brought back to Fairmont and laid to rest in the Lakeside Cemetery beside his wife and daughter, both of whom predeceased him.
