Staten Island Advance (NY) - Sunday, June 12, 2005
Deceased Name: CURTIS CALLAN, 88 Date of Death 06/04/2005 Native Islander was a Chase Bank vice president Marine Corps veteran was a great storyteller
Native Staten Islander Curtis Gove Callan was an avid reader and had worked as a bank vice president and retired from the Marine Corps Reserve as a major. On June 4, the 88-year-old died in the Meadow Lakes Retirement Community, Hightstown, N.J.
Born and raised in New Brighton, he moved to Castleton Corners with his wife and young children in the late 1940s. In 1958, Mr. Callan moved to Little Silver, N.J., where he lived more than 40 years before settling in Hightstown in 1999.
A man who highly valued education throughout his life, Mr. Callan graduated from Staten Island Academy, Dongan Hills, in 1935 and earned his bachelor's degree in economics in 1939 from Williams College, Williamstown, Mass.
In 1940, Mr. Callan joined the U.S. Marine Corps. According to his family, he was a member of the first officer candidates class in Quantico, Va., and marched in President Franklin Roosevelt's inaugural parade.
During World War II, Mr. Callan served in the Pacific, participating in the defense of Samoa and operations involving Eniwetok and Kwajalein, both in the Marshall Islands of the Pacific. Upon leaving active duty in 1945, he joined the Marine Corps Reserve as a major, retiring with the rank of lieutenant colonel in 1957.
In 1945, Mr. Callan joined Chase Bank in Manhattan, where he worked in the credit and trust departments until his retirement as a vice president in 1982.
A voracious reader of history, biographies and classic literature, Mr. Callan also would scan a wide range of newspapers every morning during his commute by ferry or train to Manhattan.
He stayed active throughout his life with Marine-like intensity, waking up at dawn to exercise every morning before work and on the weekends. He also walked whenever possible and enjoyed observing birds in exotic places - such as the Galapagos Islands, Antarctica, Chile, Australia and Manitoba.
"Gramps seemed to walk everywhere," said his grandson, Thomas Sheldon.
Mr. Callan had an infectious laugh and smile, which he often displayed while telling stories and jokes, said his daughter, Virginia Callan Sheldon.
"He was a great storyteller," she said. "He would regale his family with anecdotes."
His long-standing belief in public education led him to serve on the boards of the Little Silver Public Library, and the Little Silver and Red Bank Regional Schools, both New Jersey.
Mr. Callan's wife of 59 years, the former Frances R. Neyland, died in 2001.
In addition to his daughter, Virginia, and his grandson, surviving are his son, Curtis G. Jr; another daughter, Anne Callan Cunningham; a sister, Margaret Callan Howell Welch, seven more grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be scheduled for a later date. Arrangements, including cremation and burial of the ashes in Westlawn Cemetery in Williamstown, were handled by the Moore Funeral Home, Browns Mills, N.J.
