Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Other: William Henry Stoddard William Henry Stoddard was the first son born to Alonzo and Sarah (Frisbie) Stoddard. He was born in Middletown, Vermont, 23 January 1852. He came to Dakota Territory with the family, arriving in April 1865.

When he was sixteen, he was given "His time" by his father so that he could go into business for himself. On 18 August 1871, he married Emma Jane Coykendall, who had come to Dakota Territory in 1864 from New York State, and who lived in an adjoining homestead. At the time of their marriage, William was not old enough to file a land claim, but Emma was of legal age. They filed, the day of their wedding, on a quarter section [of land in] Middleton Township, Turner County [South Dakota]. They lived there until 1902, [when they] moved to Hurley.

William was very active in the Middleton Township / Hurley community. Besides supervising his farm, he owned a hardware store and held the positions of Justice of the Peace, city and county for forty years. He was superintendent of the Methodist Church Sunday school for over 52 years, was on the Hurley school board for 13 years, and was in the South Dakota State Legislature one term as a Representative and three terms as a Senator. He was the primary author of the Turner County Pioneer History.

William died 15 June 1934, and Emma 20 April 1935. They are both buried in the Hurley South Dakota cemetery.

Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Other: Mary Ann Stoddard Mary Ann or Anna Stoddard was the third child born to Alonzo and Sarah (Frisbie) Stoddard. She was born in Middletown, Vermont, 6 March 1855. She came to Dakota Territory with the family, arriving in April 1865. She married Alexander Hamilton Watson of Richland, South Dakota, and had one child by him. Alexander died in 1872, and she married Daniel Billing Wilcox of Richland and had three more children by him. Daniel Wilcox was born in Michigan and came to Union County in 1872. He was a veteran of the Civil War, having enlisted in 1862 and served until the end of the war. The 1880 census for Dakota Territory states that Mary lived next door in Brule Creek, Union County, to her sister, Betsey Clementson. Alonzo Stoddard's obituary indicates that Mary was married to D.B. Wilcox and living in Richland, Union County, South Dakota, at the time of Alonzo Stoddard's death in January 1892. In about 1903 she and Daniel moved to Pomona, California, where she died 19 March 1928. She and Daniel Wilcox are interred in the Pomona Mausoleum. She is listed as a housewife and Daniel as a farmer in the Pomona Mausoleum interment records..1
