  • Other: Irene Mae Stoddard was the third child born to Charles Bertrand and Emma J. Stoddard. Born 15 July 1909 on the family homestead, she spent her youth on the family farm in the Hurley, South Dakota, area, until she graduated from Hurley High School in 1926. After attending Eastern State Teachers College in Madison, SD, for 2 years, she taught in Hurley rural school District 21 and one other location. She married Joseph William Lemohn at the home farm on her parents' 30th wedding anniversary, 25 December 1932. Joseph taught in Trent, then was school superintendent in Presho and St. Lawrence South Dakota before they located in Sioux Falls in 1942. Joseph taught science and biology in the Sioux Falls Washington high school while Irene worked in gift shops and took care of the family. Irene and Joseph joined the First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls in 1943.

    Irene and Joseph had two children, Marlene Mae, born 25 July 1934, and Harlan Dean, born 30 May 1940. Harlan died in an automobile accident in November 1959 while a student at South Dakota State University in Brookings. After Joseph died in 1985, Irene lived alone until May 1999, when she went to live with her daughter, Marlene, in Merritt Island, Florida.

    Irene always had a beautiful yard of shrubs and flowers even when she was living alone after Joseph's death. She made several visits back to Sioux Falls to see her family, friends, church friends and neighbors. She died 18 October 2012 at age 103 years, 3 months, and 3 days. She is buried with Joseph and Harlan in the Hills of Rest cemetery in Sioux Falls..1
