  • Other: Alvin Lorren Stoddard Alvin Lorren Stoddard was the third of four children born to Lorren Ervin and Harriet "Hattie" Eliza (Smith) Stoddard. He was born 4 January on the home farm northeast of Hurley, South Dakota.

    He attended Sioux Falls College, where he played on the basketball team and ran track. He married Lydia Eckstein of Hurley at Hurley on 6 August 1935. After graduation from Sioux Falls College, he taught and coached in several schools, including those at Farmer, Viborg, and Vienna, South Dakota. In addition to teaching, he was Superintendent of Schools at Vienna, Selby, Humboldt, and Wakonda, South Dakota. He attended summer school at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, and received a M.A. degree in education in 1956. He served a term as president of the South Dakota School Administrators Association.

    After retiring in 1973, he and Lydia moved to Granite Falls, Minnesota. He suffered a stroke in 1986, after which they moved to the Trees Resort near Cass Lake, Minnesota, to be near their daughter, Jo Ellen (Stoddard) Helm. Later, in 1992, they moved to Prairie Village, Kansas.

    Alvin loved sports. Besides playing basketball and running track in college, he played town team baseball for many years. He also loved to hunt and fish.

    Alvin died 19 January 1996 at Delmar Gardens Nursing Home, Overland Park, Kansas. Lydia, died 9 January 1998, also at Delmar Gardens Nursing Home in Overland Park. They are buried in the Hurley Cemetery south of Hurley, South Dakota.

  • Other: Jo Ellen Stoddard Jo Ellen "Jody" (Stoddard) Helm was born 2 January 1938, at Viborg, South Dakota, to Alvin and Lydia Stoddard. She moved with her family to Selby, South Dakota, and later to Humboldt, South Dakota, where she graduated from high school. She attended Northern State College in Aberdeen, South Dakota, graduating in 1960. She married Herbert Helm at the Congregational Church in Humboldt on 29 December 1959, with whom she had three children, Michael Paul (adopted), Emily Martha, and Richard Alvin. She taught in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Palatine, Illinois, Bloomington, Minnesota, and as a substitute in Bemidji, Minnesota. They also lived for a while in Greenwald, Minnesota, Grand Forks, North Dakota, and Granite Falls, Minnesota. In 1979 they moved to the north shore of Cass Lake, Minnesota, where they owned and operated the Trees Resort and where Jody died. She was active in her church as past president of its ALCW and as a Sunday school teacher. She was a past president of the Granite Falls American Cancer Society and an active member of the Minnesota Resort Association, Congress of Minnesota Resorts, Cass Lake Resort Association, Cass lake Chamber of Commerce and the Leech Lake Alliance Association.

    Jody died of cancer on 2 November 1988 at the Trees Resort. She is buried in the Calvary Cemetery southeast of Bemidji, Minnesota. Herbert died 12 July 2010 in Phoenix, Arizona. He was cremated. His ashes have not been spread or permanently placed at the time of this writing (May 2013)..1

  • Other: Gottlob Wilhelm Eckstein Gottlob W. Eckstein was born to Matthaus and Fredericka (Haug) Eckstein on 19 November 1873 in Grosingersheim, Germany (about 20 miles north of Stuttgart). Gottlob and his sister Fredericka came to the United States, arriving in New York City on 10 May 1890 (before the immigration services at Ellis Island opened). Gottlob married Emilie Neher on 17 April 1900 in Centerville, South Dakota. They had eight children, not all of whom lived to adulthood: Barbara K., who died in 1901 at age 10 weeks, Emma L. born 6 June 1902, Barbara A. born 22 March 1904, William born 4 May 1906, Mary F. born 3 September 1907, Lydia F. born 26 May 1909, Ruth K. born 16 March 1911, and Christian born 17 July 1913. There is a wedding photograph of Gottlob and Emilie, and a photo of their early home, on page 373 of the Hurley Centennial book.

    Gottlob Eckstein died 22 December 1952. Gottlob is buried in the Zion cemetery, west northwest of Hurley, South Dakota, along with Emilie and two of their children, Barbara K. and Christian, who both died young..1

    After attending rural school she graduated from Hurley High School in 1929. She received her teaching certificate from General Beadle in Madison. On February 7, 1931 she was united in marriage to J. Ralph Benson. They had two children, Lorry and Karla.

    Ardell taught rural school for many years in Districts 90, 32, and 22. Later she received her BS degree in education from Sioux Falls College and taught elementary school in Hurley for 17 years, many of them in the first grade. She and her husband Ralph retired from the Hurley school in 1977. Her husband died in 1982.

    She was an active member of the Hurley Community having been a member of the United Methodist Church, the Rebekah Lodge, the Senior Citizens, and the Historical Society. She enjoyed attending Hurley school activities.

    She died 26 June 2003. She and Ralph are buried in the Hurley Cemetery.
