Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Other: Kelsey Barnes Stoddard Kelsey Barnes Stoddard was the fourth child born to Alonzo and Sarah (Frisbie) Stoddard. He was born in Rutland County, Vermont, 22 December 1857. He came with the family to Dakota Territory, arriving in April 1865, and settled on a homestead six miles north of Elk Point, just south of Fort Brule. He grew to manhood near the village of Richland, where he taught school during the winters and helped with farm work in the summer months. He also taught school in Plymouth County, Iowa. He first came to Turner County, Dakota Territory, where he also taught school, in 1873, but it was not until five years later that he settled on a claim in Germantown Township in Turner County.

He married Lillie Luella Ervin, also a teacher, on the Ervin homestead in Middleton, South Dakota, 29 December 1878. "The following spring they built their first frame house on the claim. Mr. Stoddard hauled the framing timbers and sheathing lumber from Stough's Mill six miles south of Elk Point, a distance of 60 miles. He hauled shingles and siding from Sioux Falls, 30 miles away. They were so poor [that] they did not own a cow, but Mrs. Stoddard's grandmother loaned them a cow the first summer and the following winter Mr. Stoddard taught a neighborhood school in their own home furnishing fuel (hay) and boarding himself at $15 per month for three months and in so doing paid for their first cow. They had no chairs, so used nail kegs instead. Mr. Stoddard broke many acres of prairie sod with oxen, planted many trees, some planted in 1873.... Mr. Stoddard often recalls the Indian raid in Union County in August 1865, when Ed La Mour was killed, T.C. Watson and Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher wounded, and their horses taken by three Sioux Indians".

In 1883 he filed on a homestead in Middleton Township where they resided until 1903, when they moved to Parker, South Dakota, after 25 years of farming. In Parker, he was in the insurance and real estate business.

Kelsey died 27 September 1944, and Lillie Luella died 4 March 1950. They are buried in the Rosehill Cemetery northwest of Parker.

Children of: Lorren Ervin Stoddard and Harriet Eliza Smith

Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Other: Lorren Ervin Stoddard Lorren E. Stoddard was born on December 22, 1879, at his maternal grandparents' farm in Middleton Township, to Mr. and Mrs. K. B. Stoddard. He was the firstborn of his parents, having two sisters, Jennie and Julia, and a brother, Leland, joining him at later dates.

The K. B. Family moved to Richland in Union County [SD] for three years after Lorren's birth, then moved back to what became the family farm in section five of Middleton Township. There Lorren grew to manhood. He attended District 21 for his early schooling and later attended the Sioux Falls Business College for further education. He helped on the farm until his parents moved to Parker [SD] when Lorren married Hattie Smith on December 17, 1903.

Hattie was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Smith and was born to them on July 12, 1882. The Smith's lived on their homestead, that later became known as the Will Wirt farm. Hattie had two sisters, Edna, and Alice, and two brothers, Arch and Delos. Hattie's early education was in the rural school just south of their farm, and later she attended Sioux Falls College for a term. After attending college, she taught the home school until her marriage to Lorren.

To Lorren and Hattie were born four children, Lucile, Gladys, Alvin, and Ardell. All four of these children attended District 231.

Lorren was an avid sportsman, loving baseball, hunting and fishing. He played baseball with teams from Hurley, Parker and Lennox. He liked to watch all sports. He was a life time member of the Hurley Methodist Church, a member of No. 81 I.O.O.F., Number 120 Masonic Lodge, and of Crown Chapter #37. He, while on the farm, was Clerk of District 21 school and of the Middleton Township Board. He also represented Turner County in the State Legislature in the years of 1913 to 1917. He was Chairman of the Appropriations Committee at the 1917 session.

The Stoddards moved from the home farm [into Hurley, SD] in 1928 as Lorren had accepted the position of manager of the Farmer's Elevator in 1927. He held that position for many years and also held the position of Mayor of Hurley for several of those years.

Lorren passed away on his 80th birthday, December 22, 1959. Hattie passed away 10 months later on October 9, 1960. They are buried in the Hurley (SD) Cemetery.
