Obituary & Burial

  • An Obituary for Fay Ann Fisher appeared after 8 Jul 2014, in Wappner Funeral Directors, Mansfield, Ohio. Fay (Fisher) Todaro

MANSFIELD: Fay (Fisher) Todaro was born at Cleveland Clinic on November 8, 1935. She was the first born child of Vaughn Fisher and Edith (Bundy) Fisher. Seven years later, Fay had a baby brother named Donald Fisher who was later known as Herk (short for Hercules). As a child Fay spent many happy days at her aunt and uncle's farm in Ashtabula county. Fay was very fond of her Aunt Evy and Uncle Sid. Fay often visited her older cousin Joan (Battles) Moore whom she admired greatly.

Fay attended Shaw schools in East Cleveland which was an upper tier school system in those days. Fay was an accomplished writer and had poetry and an essay published in a national student anthology. Fay had heard it said that Italians were good kissers. So, in her senior year in high school, she accepted a blind date with Jim Todaro to see if this was true. It was. Fay and Jim dated for four years and at the ages of 20 and 21 were married on September 15, 1956. They had a big Italian wedding that people still talk about today. Jim insisted on paying for the whole thing himself. There could not have been two more different people. Fay's ancestry goes back to the Mayflower (thank you cousin James Battles). Jim was a first generation Italian American. He was a street smart "Kinsman Cowboy" and president of student council at John Adams High. Yet they would enjoy a successful loving marriage for 52 years.

Prior to marriage Fay had been in Nurses Training at St. Luke's hospital but quickly settled into the role of a homemaker. Within three years there were two sons: James (Jimmy) now married to Beth and residing in Westerville and Anthony (Tony) now married to Lori and residing in Hamilton, NJ. Jim had launched his sales career and in 1966 the family moved from Cleveland to Chesterland. The couple joined Welcome Wagon and instantly had a large circle of friends. One friend, Gladys Wood, would become Fay's traveling companion to England and Alaska many years later. Two years after the move to Chesterland, their final son was born: Timothy (Tim) now married to Linda and residing in Chesterland. The couple was very active in the community and with their son's many activities. The family spent a large portion of their summers at Pine Way Trails Swim Club.

Once her boys had grown, Fay started her second successful career. Fay returned to school and was eventually awarded a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Akron. Fay accepted a position as a therapist at the Mansfield Mental Health Center in 1986. There she would meet fellow therapists Joyce Kirkendall and Karen Smith, "the two sisters I never had". Fay and Jim settled into a nice life in Mansfield and began to travel. Fay fell in love with Cape Cod and the two would vacation there many summers while Fay attended psychotherapy workshops. They especially enjoyed whale watching. For their 30th wedding anniversary they took a cruise on the Mediterranean visiting Spain, France, and Italy. Fay's favorite trips were to Disney with her family. Fay loved her work as a therapist. She felt great satisfaction from seeing people healed. She knew that her clients did the healing and that she just provided the guidance. She also enjoyed her many coworkers, especially John Caldwell.

Jim developed Alzheimer's disease in 2004 and Fay cared for him until his death in 2008. Fay never recovered from her husband's death. After Mercy Hospital in Willard closed their Psychiatric unit, Fay spent the last years of her career working in nursing homes providing geriatric counseling. Fay retired in January of 2013 after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's. She spent her time relaxing, reading, gardening, enjoying her television shows, and following the news on her six grandchildren who she adored. Recently, she took a special interest in the newest members of the family, her niece Lisa's children, Emma and Will Uehlinger. She always loved babies. Last November, Fay had foot surgery and never fully recovered. It really set her back physically and cognitively. Fay passed away unexpectedly in her home on July 8, 2014. Ironically, she was feeling better than she had in months in the days before her death.

Fay did not want a funeral. A memorial celebration is being planned. Please keep Fay and Jim in your prayers. The Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors is privileged to serve the family.
