Against this, however, is a handwritten note on a genealogical form naming Simeon Thompson Shepard and Mary Lindley. The children of Simeon and Mary are listed as Porter, John, David Lindley, Simeon T, Mary Ann and Josiah. No dates of birth are given except for Simeon and David. (This form is in the possession of Frances Shepard Cooper.) The note adds: "Aurelia Brockway Hamilton - Olive's sister - wrote a poem about the death of a Josiah Shepherd, a 30 yr. old preacher who died 24 hrs after terrible burns from a still that shot hot liquid out." A different note, by Alice Shepard Jeffrey, refers to Josiah Shepard and says, "We think he died in a fire at Gilmantown. See poem by Aurelia Brockway Hamilton.".1,2

    Mrs. Hoadley dies at Faxon, Oklahoma. Funeral arrangements to be announced by Ritters Chapel.

    Mrs. Mae Shepard Hoadley, 95, died at 8 o'clock Saturday evening at the home of her stepdaughter [should be adopted daughter], Mrs. P. B. Farris, Faxon, where she came to live in 1932. Mrs. Hoadley succumbed after a brief illness. She was born June 19, 1842 at Solon, Ohio. She united with the Christian Church there early in life. Other survivors include a sister Mrs. Addie Senter of Macedonia, Ohio; two nephews at Sedalia, Mo., and two nieces in Colorado.

  • Address: circa 1866, David Lindley and Olive B. (née Brockway) Shepard lived at: Arrow Rock Twp., Saline County, MissouriG. David and Olive moved from Trumbull county Ohio to Arrow Rock, Saline County, Missouri. The family, including Mary Hoadley and Emily Brockway (Olive's youngest sister), arrived at Arrow Rock in March 1866. They and their goods going by boat (named "Itaska") down the Ohio River to the Mississippi and up the Mississippi to its junction with the Missouri River, up the Missouri River to Arrow Rock. Olive's son Guel had gone to Missouri in 1865 looking for land and bought land for himself near Sedelia and for the Shepard's about 1/2 mile south of Arrow Rock. The house was on the Boonville Road. The farm was bought from a St. Louis family, "Hawpe". The house was built of walnut logs, weather boarded outside, laths and plastered interior - we (Lucille Shepard DeReign, granddaughter of Olive. Her father was Frank O. Shepard.) did not know it was logs until it was torn down! It had a parlor, living room, dining room and kitchen in a line and four bedrooms across the hallway.. Also living at this address: Mary Hoadley, Emily J. Brockway and Clyde Lindley Shepard.1

He died on December 27, 1913, leaving a wife, two brothers, three sisters and a host of friends to mourn the loss of a kind and helpful husband, brother and friend. Interment was made here.4

He's not in the 1870 or 1880 census, and he's not mentioned in his father's will in 1894. Jean and I could not find a grave marker for him in the vicinity of his parents' grave in Solon..1
