Obituary & Burial

  • An Obituary for Mabel Erler appeared on Tuesday, 23 Aug 1988, in The Chicago Tribune, Chicago, Illinois. Mabel Erler Pargellis, 84

Mabel Erler Pargellis, 84, a retired employee of the Newberry Library, worked there from 1928 to 1965 and was head of its technical services department.

Memorial services for Mrs. Pargellis, a resident of Hiawatha, Kan., will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday inHiawatha. She died Friday in Hiawatha General Hospital after a long illness.

''Mabel was one of three persons who ran the library,'' Lawrence Towner, Newberry's president and librarian emeritus, said. ''She was a powerful person here. She knew the collections well, especially the European and literary ones. When I came here as a young man, she was very kind to me. She had a devoted following among the staff. I admired her.''

Mrs. Pargellis, who had been known as Mrs. Erler while working at the library on the Near North Side, attended Northwestern University and the University of Chicago.

She traveled to Europe to buy books and other research materials for the library and corresponded regularly with many of the distinguished book dealers of the continent, England and the United States.

After she retired in 1965, she married Stanley Pargellis, Newberry's fifth librarian, who had retired three years earlier. He died in 1968, and she returned to her native Hiawatha.

Survivors include a sister and two brothers.

Kathie had a lifelong love for her family summer retreat in Cape Porpoise, Maine and spent some meaningful portion of all but one summer of her life on the seashore there.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Three Crowns Foundation, 2323 McDaniel Avenue, Evanston, IL 60201, phone 224-420-3063.

A memorial service is planned for later this spring.
