  • Other: James Franklin Gillis James Gillis left Tennessee sometime early in the 20th century and made his way to Oklahoma. He married there and it is possible that his wife, Ellen Johnson, was Indian. I remember meeting him at his daughter's home in Torrance, California, in 1954-55 era. He told some of the most fascinating stories of Unicoi County. He apparently helped build or worked on the railroad that was built from Johnson City to Erwin and was on the first trip to Erwin. Seems that there were no cattle guards or fences keeping the livestock off the road bed and they had to let down the fences at every spot, let the train through, then close the fence. “Took dang near all day to go 14 miles.” His description of the living to be made from Unicoi County soil was that the “land was so poor that all you could raise on it was hell and umbrellas.” I think he liked to exaggerate!.1
