Obituary & Burial

  • An Obituary for John Thomas Mercer appeared on Wednesday, 28 Dec 1898, in The Blunt Newspaper, Blunt, South Dakota. Obituary
Died in Blunt, SD, December 16, 1898, John Thomas Mercer, aged 49 years. The people of our community were shocked when the intelligence was passed from one to another that our esteemed fellow citizen, who less than one short week before walked among us the picture of health, lay cold in the embrace of death. Mr. Mercer's difficulty was obstruction of the bowels, of a nature that medical skill was of no avail. Through the painful hours of his illness he retained his senses and talked with composure of his business affairs, and of his approaching end for which he had no fears. His thoughts were for his loved ones soon to be left alone. Funeral services were conducted at the family residence on Sunday at two o'clock, by Rev. J. P. Williamson, assisted by Rev. A. MacFarlane. The members of the Masonic Lodge, of which deceased was the honored sdcretary [sic], attended in a body and officiated at the cemetery with the rites of the Order. Brother members were also present from towns around. The funeral was the largest held in Blunt for years, nearly 300 persons being present, to pay their respects to the departed and show their sympathy for the bereaved family. Mr. Mercer was born in Weston, Wood Co., Ohio, Aug. 7, 1849; was married Feb. 21 1878 to Miss Lucy A. Cass. In January 1883 the came to Dakota and settled in Sully county. Five children have been born to the union who are left with their mother to mourn the loss of a kind and loving husband and father. In his death also there has passed away an upright citizen and business man who will be missed by the community. The bereaved have the deep sympathy of all.

Blunt Newspaper, Date 28 Dec 1898.
