Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Other: Evelyn Carter Penn Alex Luken writes: " I also found a book on the Ford Glass Co. ("Salt of the Earth," 1940, the 50th Anniversary of the Michigan Alkali Co.) at the Filson and it mentions that Edward Ford was working for the Atlantic Steamship line and met Evelyn Carter Penn when she was traveling back and forth with her mother from Louisville to New Orleans. They married in 1865, had two children, and she was dead by 1871 (actually, 1870, not listed with Ford family in the 1870 Floyd Co. Census). This would fit with the Sally Fontaine Floyd's petition to have her widow's pension transferred from LA to KY in 1861, after her daughter died and she moved back to KY. I believe GRCF may have had property down there...Evelyn's John went to Harvard and became president of a Ford subsidiary in Detroit. Mary married Mark Reeves Bacon.".

Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Other: Edward Ford When he came to Toledo in 1898, Edward Ford had already organized several glass companies, including the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company. Ford's father, John Ford, was called the "father of the plate glass industry" in the United States. Edward Ford purchased 160 acres of land just outside the Toledo city limits in Wood County, where he built an entirely mechanized factory. It featured an electric overhead trolley system to move the grinding and polishing tables to the glass, a first in the glass industry, as well as a new, continuous system of heating and cooling which produced a less brittle glass. The Edward Ford Plate Glass Company began operations in the spring of 1899. To house his workers, Ford created the new community of Rossford, completing the first thirty-seven homes in 1899.

The son of John Baptiste Ford, Edward Ford was born January 21, 1843, in Greenville, Indiana. In 1898, he purchased 173 acres of farm land on the Maumee River to build his plate glass factory. In August of that year, the Edward Ford Plate Glass Company broke ground and a new business and a new community was born.

Trainloads of workers came from the glass plants in Pennsylvania to rejoin the Ford family in Edward's new venture. Around the factory, Rossford grew up as a company town. The name was derived by combining the surname of Edward's second wife-Ross-with his own. He built the Ford Club near the plant as a place for employees of the glass company to get together with fellow workers and their families.

And Edward Ford's generosity to the community went beyond construction and the opportunity to work. People would often see him walking into the village's groceries, drug stores and meat markets. It was not until after his death in 1920 that it was learned he was quietly paying the long overdue bills of his employees..2
