Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Other: Graydon George Wheeler Notes from the 1928 'Badger' Yearbook - University of Wisconsin, Madison.
Graydon George Wheeler, Pepin. Electrical Engineering. First Lieutenant Cadet Corps 3: A.I.E.E. 3,4; Kappa Eta Kappa; Treasurer Pi Tau Pi Sigma.

Graydon Wheeler was the youngest of the Wheeler children. Graydon's father, George, was a mail route carrier in rural Pepin, Wisconsin. As a young boy, Graydon was responsible for bringing fresh horses to his father halfway through the route. He would then take the tired horses home and cool them down, groom them, and put them away. He always hoped to move to the city one day.

A funny story he used to share was about how he built a crystal radio set when he was a teenager. Radios were very uncommon in those days. For an antenea, he ran a wire from his upper bedroom window across the yard and driveway to the barn. When his Uncle visited one time, he took the Uncle up to his room to hear the radio. A band was playing. His Uncle was so started by the music and wanted to know how he did it. He didn't accept his young nephew's explanation of how a radio worked! Then he spottedthe wire and said, 'Oh, I know how you did it.' He ran outside and across the yard and threw open the barn doors, fully expecting to find the band in their playing that music! He finally had to accept what a 'radio' was capable of, although Graydon was never sure he really had understood.

Graydon lived with his sister, Alva and her husband Charlie in Madison, Wisconsin, while he went to school at the University of Wisconsin. Alva tells of a time when Graydon decided to 'treat' the family to a special dessert on winter's day. He sneaked ice cream into the house and up to his room on the second floor, and then opened the window and stuck it outside, closing the window on the bag to hold it there. Unfortunately, even though it was below freezing outside, the sun was shining, so when he went to retrieve his 'treat' all they had was melted ice cream! Shesaid he was so disappointed.

After Gladys died, Graydon was very lonely. He had never particularly cared for Glady's sister, Thelma, as Thelma tended to be quite independent -- having been a widow for years. However, after Gladys died, they stayed in touch and became close -- finally taking a couple of trips together, and visiting each other. One day Graydon showed up at Judie's house and, in almost a role reversal, asked Judie what she would think if he got married again. Judie replied, 'well, if it is to some young blonde fluzzie, forget it! But if it is to Aunt Thelma, I couldn't be happier!' Graydon was so astonished and said, 'How did you know?' As if it hadn't been obvious! As a joke, when Thelma got off the plane after flying to Minneapolis for the wedding, she wore a big blond wig!.1

Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Other: Gladys Lucille Mears Gladys was a Girl Scout Leader for daughter Judie's scout troop, and then was an Organizational Leader for the Girl Scouts in the Richfield, Minnesota District. She also served as Head of the United Way in Richfield for several years. Her hobbies included cooking (she was a Home Economics Major at the University of Wisconsin), sewing and crocheting. She used to crochet items just by site, without using apattern. For example, she made doll clothes for Judie's dolls by just holding up the piece against the doll periodically as she shaped and crocheted the clothing -- and it always came out beautiful.

When Judie was 16 years old (which would have made it about the summer of 1961), Gladys had a stroke and heart attack, all within a few day period. She was in Northwestern Hospital, and doctors said she would not make it through the night. The next morning, the doctors were astonished as they told the family that she was still with us, and although it was still touch and go, it looked like she might make it.

Several weeks later, Gladys told Judie what had occurred. She claimed to have 'died' and met God, face to face. She said He told her it was "Timeto go." She says she asked to be left with her family, but He said, "No." She finally said she argued and begged to be allowed to see all of her grandchildren before she was taken away from Earth. God, according to her, finally relented, and apparently told her He would allow it, but that she would not see age 70. (She was about 56 at this time.)

Judie's daughter, Julie, was the last grandchild born to Gladys in 1969. In 1973, while at Gladys and Graydon's house, Gladys was very sad and mentioned to Judie and Len Mozey that she was about to die; that she would not see 70. Len quickly did the math and said, "Mom, you're only 68, so you'll be 69 next month." She looked startled, but soon figured out he was correct. She jumped up, full of energy, and headed for the kitchen to help finish with Thanksgiving Dinner preparations.

The next year, she was very quiet at Thanksgiving, and sure enough, she passed away on December 19, 1974 -- just 9 days before she would have been 70. And, she got to spend time with each of her seven grandchildren. -- Notes by Judith Wheeler Mozey.1

Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Anecdote: circa 1951, Ethel Luvere Axtell Ethel was a remarkable woman. Sometime after she was 75 years old, she fell and broke her back, requiring surgery and the wearing of a brace. She healed within three months time and raised her grandson, Bruce Linney, after that time, as Thelma Mears Linney had to work full time as a single mother supporting the family.

Ethel's hobbies were gardening and knitting. Before she died, she knitted an afghan for each of her grandchildren, allowing them to choose their own colors. By the time she knitted the last one, which was for granddaughter, Judith Wheeler, she had gone blind, but she had knitted that pattern so many times, that she was able to finish the afghan. And even better than that, she taught Judie how to knit, which became her life-long hobby as well.1
