    STEPHEN CANTRALL

    Died at his home in Round Valley, Idaho, Thursday, Nov. 23, 1911 at 5 o'clock P.M. Stephen Cantrall aged 76 years, 7 months and 14 days. He was a man of generous impulse and never forgot the hospitable ways of the pioneers. The stranger, even though a beggar, never failed to find food and shelter if he sought it at his hands, and he was at home by the bedside of the sick, and delighted in all kind of neighborly offices. He bore adversity bravely and enjoyed prosperity quietly. He has filled the various relations of life as son, husband, father, brother, friend, and filled them well. Who could do more? But he is gone! Another name is stricken from the ever lessening roll of old settlers. It must be so, these tender humanities cannot be severed without pang. Yet in such a death there is really no cause for grief. His life work is done and well done and wearied with lifes duties and cares. Weary of suffering and waiting, he lay down to rest. He was born in Locust Grove, Indiana, April 9, 1835 and moved with his parents to Cook County, Illinois, where he resided until 17 years of age, when he crossed the Plains to Jackson County, Oregon, where he was among the first settlers. He was married to Mrs. Catherine Simpson on June 25, 1861, who died the following year. Of this union one son was born who followed its mother to the world beyond a few days after the mother's death. He was married again in March 1, 1863 to Mary E. Newlin, who departed this life July 19, 1888. Of this union 13 children were born, of whom 4 have proceeded him to the other side. He moved to California with his family in 1869. He was again married in that state to Mrs. Phoebe Hill (Hidd), Jan. 2, 1890. In 1895 he came to this place, with part of his family, where he resided until his death. He is survived by his wife and 9 children. Andrew, William, and Jesse Cantrall and Jane McGinnis of Alturas, CA., S. I. and John Cantrall, Mrs. Lillie Hite and Mrs. Essie Herrick of this place, and Charles Cantrall of Emmett, Idaho. Although we bury him here in the cold ground, it is not here that we will think of him or remember him, but in his many cherry words when he would tell us of God, the supreme power, who graciously planned a happy home for his children when he called them to leave their earthly home. He was always a devoted husband and loving father and for many years past has been a true Christian Scientist and delighted in the study of teachings of his faith. Mr. Cantrall was buried in the Alpha Cemetery Sunday. Rev. T. P. Graham

    A personal note from his great granddaughter: On a cold day 23 November, 1911, Stephen is called to meet his maker. It was too cold to dig a grave. He was finally buried the following Sunday.3

    Dan spoke of Stephen Cantrall as "Lucky Steve." Dan said Stephen had a placer mine (see sale record of mining claim in Jackson Co., Oregon) on Gold Run in Jackson Co., Oregon. Stephen told Dan that he was taking better than $3,000. a day from this placer mine.

    Dan said that Stephen Cantrall was a real gunman -- one of the best. His reputation as a gunman caused trouble when he wanted to marry Kitty (Catherine T.) Simpson in Jacksonville, Oregon. Kitty's brother came looking for Steve. Steven faced him down and ordered him to draw. Kitty's brother wouldn't draw so Stephen threw a gun at his feet and ordered him to pick it up. Her brother refused so Steve threw a knife at this feet, ordering him to pick it up. Kitty's brother then turned and left and Stephen and Catherine T. were married (see marriage records, Jackson Co., Ore.) Dan told of Stephen striding back and forth angrily as he related the story to Dan. Kitty Simpson died during childbirth and she is buried in the Simpson Plot at the Jacksonville Cemetery. The son of Stephen and Kitty, William F., died a few days later and he is buried with his mother.

    After Stephen's second wife, Mary Elizabeth Newlin, passed away in 1888, Stephen and the remainder of his small children moved to Long Valley, Idaho. Stephen Cantrall married Phoebe Ann (Conklin) Hill in Susanville, Butte Co., Calif., in 189l before the family went to Idaho. Dan said Phoebe has "bright, red hair" and that she was "mean as hell!" Although, Dan related that Phoebe was real good to the small children.

    Stephen homesteaded twice in Long Valley. He wasn't happy with his first homestead so he used Phoebe to gain another homestead. He had Phoebe claim that they were separated so she was able to get homestead rights in her own name.

    Dan said Stephen Cantrall told him his forefathers came from Wales. They settled in the Mississippi Valley. Dan said there are Cantrall relatives living in Texas.

    Dan Frederick Cantrall was the son of Stephen Lafayette, son of Stephen and Mary E. (Newlin) Cantrall. Dan was a teenager while his grandfather, Stephen, was around in Long Valley, Idaho. Dan said he followed his Grandfather everywhere asking for more stories. Dan said that when his Grandfather Stephen passed away, he went into a deep mourning. He was so fond of his grandfather..
