Sarah Cantrall Beloved Pioneer Called by Death

Sarah A. Cantrall, 89, beloved pioneer of southern Oregon passed away March 25 at the home of her daughter in Jacksonville. Sarah A. Newlin was born in Mercer county, Missouri, January 20, 1846. In 1853 the family crossed the plains to Oregon by emigrant train of 100 wagons and settled in Benton County, Oregon, where they resided until 1857 when they moved to a farm near Eagle Point. In June 1862 Sarah was united in marriage to John Cantrall and moved to the Sterling mines, residing there for three years. In 1865 she and her husband moved to the farm on Applegate now owned by Frank Preston. After the loss of her husband in 1890 she moved to Jacksonville and lived in the historic town until her passing. She was the mother of 12 children, five of whom survive, residing at their respective homes. Omar Cantrall, Merrill, Oregon, James M. Cantrall and Amy Dow, Jacksonville, Oregon and Miles Cantrall of Ruch, Oregon and John Cantrall of Medford, Oregon. Besides the above are one brother Thomas Newlin of Alturas, Cal., numerous grand-children and great grand-children and many other relatives. Grandma Cantrall was an honored member of the Southern Oregon Pioneers society, and took great pleasure from its meetings and associations with other pioneers. She was thoroughly imbued with the pioneer spirit, generous and thoughtful to others, never turning the needy or hungry away from her door. Funeral services will be conducted from the Perl Funeral Home, Wednesday, March 27 at 1:30 P.M. and burial will take place in the family plot at the Sterling cemetery. Friends and acquaintances are invited to attend the services.2

Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Other: Omar Cantrall In approximately 1899, Omar Cantrall built the Cantrall Sawmill. The mill was built on Omar Cantrall's land and was located five miles north of Jess Valley on the western slope of the Warner Mountains. Omar ran this Mill and usually employed about 34 men. Most of them lived in cabins that surrounded the Mill site; the cabins were occupied year round.

Three or four of those men had families. The Bowmans and the McGinnisses were two such families. The McGinnis Place was located at the Mill site, but the Bowman family had their own homestead over the hill, three miles to the northwest of the Mill site. The children from both families attended the Chance School which was one mile north of the McGinnis Place. This Chance School operated until it was abandoned in 1908, and the school-aged children who remained among the families of this little Mill community began attending the Jess Valley School.

The men who worked at the Mill had a rough life, rising at four in the morning and retiring after supper - which usually was not served until six in the evening or a little later. Much was done between these hours. The first chore was catching and harnessing the horses before breakfast. Breakfast was always around six, and the Mill was in operation by seven o'clock. A good dinner-type lunch was enjoyed by all, and the end of the work day came at five in the evening. More chores, including tending the horses, were done after five o'clock.

The Mill operated from Spring through Fall. In the winter months the men logged, using a bobsled pulled by horses to bring the logs in. My great grandfather, James Walter Cantrall, had the contract to haul hay to the Mill for the horses during the winter. He was nineteen at the time. Walter would go to the Flournoy Ranch to get the hay. He hauled the hay with a four-horse team. He always said that by the time he got to the Mill, his hands were frozen.

During the time the Mill was in operation, there was no electricity. Wood furnaces were used to make steam. There was a pond behind the Mill used as a water supply for the furnaces and to float the logs until they were needed. During the summer months, yellow pine, bull pine, and some fir trees were brought in from the surrounding mountains. People needing lumber could place an order for the size boards they needed. The lumber was marketed all over the county as well as in Jess Valley. Some lumber was hauled by team and wagon into Alturas. The lumber not taken to Alturas was taken to Likely and shipped on the N.C.O. (Nevada-California-Oregon) Railroad. Some old-timers jokingly called the N.C.O. train "The Narrow, Crooked, and Ornery."

There wasn't much time for recreation in the busy, hard lives of the men, but the dances were always popular. These community dances were held at the Jess Valley Schoolhouse.

The wages of the Mill workers in those days seem small until they are compared with expenses and wages of other workers. Mill workers earned $3.00 per day, and the Mill's saw runner made $4.00. Ranch hands during that time earned $1.00 a day, and hayers earned $2.00. Wages were good, considering that they included three square meals a day and that a new pair of overalls cost $1.00. A loaf of bread cost ten cents from the nearest store, which was Likely.

There are a few structures still standing today (1991) that were built from lumber from the Cantrall Mill. Some of the buildings are standing on the ranch of my great grandparents, Elsie and Walter Cantrall. A few fuildings at Rodney Flournoy's ranch in Jess Valley were built with Cantrall Mill lumber.

In approximately 1918, Omar Cantrall began closing the Mill. The exact date of its closure is unknown. Due to a lack of millable trees remaining in the nearby forests, operations began a slow but steady decline. Continuing the operation would mean that the trees would have to be brought in from a much greater distance, and there were no trucks available to haul the logs to the Mill. Smokey Bill and Elmer Cantrall, sons of Thomas Ichabod Cantrall, fed the horses and felled some trees after the Mill closed. It is certain that the Mill wasn't operating any later than 1923.

All that stands at the old Mill site today is the brick stand that the steam engine sat on. To this day, the Mill has been closed 68 years and will most likely remain closed.....forever..4
