  • Anecdote: Thomas Jearld Welch THOMAS J WELCH (WELSH) was born in 1883 in New York. He is the son of Pat Welch and a Miss Nor__? Welch. Pat (Patrick) Welch and his wife were born in Ireland. They came to New York before Thomas J Welch (Welsh) was born. He may have had a sister by the name of Marguerite, he named his daughter this name later. He ran away at the age of 16 to join Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders. These rough men fought a war in Cuba. This was a colorfull band of men. Each was hand-picked by Roosevelt himself! There were river-boat gamblers, cowboys, West Point cadets, Harvard men, illiterate, and educated.

    They were selected on how well they could fight. After the war, Thomas joined the army and was stationed in Bracketville, TX. It was then that he met Elizabeth Ann Cox. He got out of the army in 1906, just a year before he married Lizzie. Later they moved to Arkansas. They lived there a short time and moved to St. Louis. They lived there four years, until the time of his death. He worked for the railroad. His job was the daytime foreman in the roundhouse.

    Margie says that, her daddy, Thomas J. ran away to join Roosevelt's Rough Riders. He obviously lied about his age. She seemed to think he was 16. The Rough Riders rode in 1905 which would mean that he was more like 12. The date of his birth was obtained from a copy of his death certificate. I don't know if it could possibly be wrong or not. If it isn't he must have been a big 12 year old to convince anyone he was old enough to go. The name "rough riders" was given to the group because they were the best fighters around. This also tells us something else about our great grandfather (Debra Colette Williams Griffin writing this).

    When he married Elizabeth while stationed at Bracketville in the army, Margie was told that he was disowned by his family because of their wealth and position. All we really know is 1. He ran away from home, 2. He married someone his family disapproved of. He really sounds like a colorful character. I wish we knew more of him. He rode with some famous men in the rough riders also. He seems like he just came alive out of the pages of an old Louis L'Mour classic!

    The family moved to St. Louis eventually, were Margie was born. They lived there four years when Thomas was killed. His official cause of death as listed on his death certificate was lumbar pneumonia, but that is a common complication of severe burns. He was scalded when the boiler blew up at the railroad and was hospitalized for the burns, developing pneumonia and dying a few days later.2
