    Mrs. William H. Brown Takes Own Life - Had Tried Suicide Before

    In a second and successful attempt to end her own life, Mrs. Bernice Brown, 35, wife of William H. Brown, Grand Rapids undertaker, now serving a prison sentence in Jackson, strangled herself yesterday in the cellar of her home at 216 Wealthy St., S. E.

    Warren C. Thompson of 1858 Thomas Ave. SW., found the body, suspended by a clothesline from a rafter, when he entered the basement of the Brown home to read an electric meter. Thompson, employed by the Consumers' Power company, summoned Mrs. Charles Bell, mother of Mr. Brown. The woman had been dead for less than a half hour, Coroner Simeon LeRoy stated.

    Wife Was Despondent

    Brown was sentenced to serve from one and a half to 10 years by Judge Maj. L. Dunham in superior court on April 8, when a jury found him guilty of false pretenses. Mrs. Brown became despondent when her husband began serving the sentence and several weeks ago inhaled chloroform fumes at her home. She was found near death, but was revived. Surviving beside the mother, is a brother Clarence Bell of Farmington and a sister Mrs. Fred Whittacker, 302 Cass Ave., SE.
