ActivityDetails
Moved Moved: in 1852, William Alexander Robinson moved with William Robinson and Sophronia Kelch from Farmington, Michigan. They took up land some 60 miles north in Lapeer County. They followed a blazed trail and they had to virtually cut their home out of the forest. They built houses of logs with oiled paper for windows. They had wild game and fish in abundance, but they had to conserve their little store of corn and wheat until they could harvest their first crop, which was planted on the land cleared from the forest. They raised flax and from it made linen for clothing. They spun wool into yarn and wove blankets. To buy actual necessities they made charcoal to sell and shingles by hand from logs, and then carried these products many miles to market from their new home to Oregon Twp., Lapeer County, MichiganG.

Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Anecdote: in 1897, at Mayville, Tuscola County, MichiganG, Sarah Emma Putman According to her grandaughter, Elva May (Mercer) Cook, Grandma Sarah died after a lengthy illness. Her daughter, Rose May, attended her mother's funeral with her family and went to get in the family buggy afterwards and her father looked at her and said, "where are you going?" She told him she was going home. He told her that she would have to go live with her Aunt Rose...and kicked her out of the buggy. She stayed with her Aunt for a short time and left because she was essentially a servant for her younger cousins. She moved in with a Dr. Goetschel (poss. Gotschall sp?) and his wife nearby and lived there until she met and married O. T. Mercer.

Census-1881 Canada1881, Found a widow, Margray Johnson (45), in Scott, Ontario North, Ontario, Canada. Her birth place is shown as Scotland. She has what appears to be 7 children (6 daughters and 1 son) and one woman (81 years old) with the same first name but last name of Robinson. The older woman's birth place is also Scotland. It is possible that this Mary A. is the second wife of William Alexander Robison. It is possible that they were distant cousins.
