Children of: William Robinson and Sophronia Kelch

Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Other: William Robinson In the early history of the American Colonies the name of Robison is often mentioned. This family was of Scotch-Irish extraction and had settled in Virginia in the early part of the eighteenth century.
One member of the family served in the French and Indian war. His son William, a native of Virginia, served throughout the war of the Revolution and lived to see the American colonies become an independent nation. In his early manhood, he moved to Kentucky, where he lived until his death. It was William, the son of William, who founded the Michigan branch of the Robison family. This William reared in Kentucky felt the call of his ancestors, who had been sea-faring people, and followed the sea for several years. He married Sophronia of Pennysylvania. She was of Holland Dutch stock and her father's family had also helped to make early history of the colonies. To them were born eight children. Rebecca, John, Martin, Elias, Harmon, Sarah, William and Edwin.
From the time of their marriage their home had been in New York State, near Syracuse, but feeling they could better their lot in the new middle western country they set out, in the year 1840 with their entire family which now included Margaret Alexander, the wife of John. The journey was made with ox-teams along the Erie Canal to the town of Erie, then by boat across Lake Erie to Monroe, Mi. and from there by ox-team to Farmington, Mi. The land was low and swampy and the family suffered badly from malaria or ague as it was then known. After months of hardship and homesickness, they made the tedious journey back to New York.
However the spirit of adventure was in their blood and three years later the family, which now included Wesley and Mary, the children of John returned to Michigan, settling in aganin in Farmington. In 1848 William, the father, went to to serve in the Mexican War returning at the close of the war.
In 1852 William and Sophronia Robinson with their sons, John and William took up land in Oregon Township, Lapeer County. They followed a blazed trail to Lapeer county where they had to virtually cut their home out of the forest. They built houses of logs with oiled paer for windows.
Wild game and fish they had in abundance, but they had to conserve their little store of corn and wheat until they could harvest their first crop, which was planted on the land cleared from the forest. They raised flax and from it made linen for clothing. They spun wool into yarn and wove blankets. To buy actual necessities they made charcoal to sell and shingles by hand from logs, and then carried these products many miles to market.
William died in 1859 and his wife, Sophronia in 1860.
Their sons, Elias remained in Farmington and some of his descendants are living there now. Harmon and Martin eventually settled in Clinton County where their descendants now live.
Rebecca married Edwin Ney. Seven children were born to them. Ellen, Cynthia, Sadie, Edwin, Anastasis, George and William. Three are now living Ellen, Edwin and George.
John had ten children, Wesley, Mary, William, Sophronia, Rebecca, Elias, Adeline, Caroline, Oscar and Frank. Wesley, William, Sophronia, Oscar and Frank are alive.
Martin had seven children, Harmon, Susan, Martin, Louisa, William and Metta.
Elias' children, Oscar, William, Georgis, and Frank are all living
Harmon had four children, Elias, Frank, Fred and Eugene
Sarah married Fred Tobias. They had two children, William and Fred
William had five children, Dell, Charlie, Eva, Duane, and Guy. Eva is still living.

The older ones of these grandchildren of William Robison and Sophronia Kelch can well remember the privations they and their parents endured while laying the foundations of the civilization that we, their descendants enjoy..1
  • Other: William Robinson William, a native of Kentucky, felt the call of his ancestors and followed the sea for several years. When he returned he married Sophronia Kelch of Pennsylvania. Her family was Holland and Dutch. William was Scottish-Irish. William and Sophronia had eight children, they made their home in Syracuse, New york.

Feeling they could do better in the middle western counrty in 1840 they set out with their family, which now included Margaret Alexander the wife of their son John..5
  • Other: William Robinson William's ancestors were Scotch/Irish. The Robison's settled in Virginia in the early 1700's. William fought in the Mexican War in 1848. His father had fought in the Revolutionary War and his grandfather soldiered in the French and Indian wars..
