Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Anecdote: Unknown (?) This daughter was probably born out of wedlock. Edith tried to pass her off as her niece. When the child was still young, she decided to give her up for adoption. A nice couple from Michigan that had some money wanted to adopt her. At first, Edith told them no. Then she let them take her for about a month. When the daughter came back she had all new clothes and toys. Edith decided she did not want to let go of her. But, a short while later, she decided to go ahead and let them adopt her. When asked about her, she told people that she had "lost her in a windstorm." When the girl was in school, she went looking for her and found her at the school. Edith was reportedly drunk and cried out to the girl, "I'm your real Mommy." It scared the girl quite badly and she never saw Edith again.

Rose Mercer felt that the reason she was not allowed to stay at her father's house after her mother died was that he and Mary needed Rose's bedroom for this young girl of Mary's.1
