    12 year old Barney reportedly stowed away on a ship sailing from Poland to the United States. He was discovered by the crew and held in the brig. During the voyage many of the ship's crew members became ill. In exchange for being jailed Barney was able to work in the place of the sick crew and ended up earning his fare on the ship.

    He made his way to Washington state where he legally and at a fair price bought land from a Kalamath Indian. He and his family lived next to the family, the Indian's wife's name was Annie and Mom said it was normal for her grandmother to go visit "Indian Annie."10,6,7
