Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Anecdote: Virginia Adeline Jones "Aunt Virgie." She was sort of an (in)famous aunt in my mother's family. She came from a family of eight children and she ended up having ten children of her own. She was a younger sister of my great-grandmother, Ada Ann (née Jones) Lewis. She first married William Carl Newman, Jr. He was an immigrant from Germany. They went on to have eight children. Her husband died at age 44 and she remarried her older sister, Grace Irene's, widower, William Garfield Kinney. Her last two children were from her second husband. He had a total of five children between the two sisters. She divorced her first husband in 1923 about a year before his death. A newspaper article makes it appear that the divorce was very messy and required a restraining order. That was somewhat unusual in 1923. He committed suicide and wasn't found for more than a month. One year later in 1925, she married her neighbor and older sister's surviving spouse. One of the stories that is often told about her is that whenever they were getting ready to go somewhere she would always say, "Let me get my camry." This signature line so irritated one of her nieces, Dodi Hacker, so much that she refused to even consider purchasing a Toyota Camry, one of the best-selling sedans at the time.7
